Prints, finished products (like in Zazzle).

you could check out portrait photography in your area and see if there is room for another.  If you want to set something simple up you could just do portraits for websites like linkedIn where people need a decent headshot.

I am not sure about doing Zazzle. Might try to get stuff up there sometime.

The Head shots thing...I already know one person in my area doing that and even he is suffering for work. I wish it was sustainable though...I would like doing that. Maybe Senior Pics Outdoors or something. Cheerleading or Sports for those Families who like to spend on their kids. Could possibly network that through Myspace or Facebook....find the kids to add me first without being a Internet Predator...lol.

Might try going artistic and put things on deviantart. I do know the owner of a Alternate Religions Store...wonder if he is going to do a website again. If so...maybe Product Photos? Might have to go talk to him.

I think I really need to move back to a larger city.

Sorry... I decided to revise my comments..  I realized after I read them,  it would tick off some folks.  Even still they may... oh well.

LSD72... it depends where you live. I live between NYC & Philly... where there is still plenty of money freely floating around.  I have contracted to a magazine/newspaper company which is great money if you can get in the door.  I also do headshots, maternity, newborn,  highschool seniors,  engagement pix...
...edited: dont want to offend anyone....
Primarily, it depends where you live and what the market will bear.  Keep it simple, keep your overhead down ( my studio fits in the back of my Chevy Suburban) and mostly, keep the greed factor in check.  You can make money.

Thanks for the Ideas. This area I am in has the heartbeat of a 92 Year Old Man on their Deathbed. Kingsport, Tennessee. I have not worked since Nov. last year. Every week it seems some company is going out of Business .. laying off about 100 people each loss at a minimum. If Eastman closes here....this town is a gonner for sure. Thats a part of the reason I jumped at the MS game. What ever I need to do... I got to do here and sell elsewhere. The guy with the Rel. Store I mentioned...he does not know how much longer he can keep his doors open.

I know 2 'Togs. 1 (I know as a personal friend) wants to break into weddings but he says that market is sewn up by the ones who do it right now. He has been trying for about 2 years to even get his foot into that circle of  'Togs. The Other one does the Headshots for like Linkedin...he is hurting for work. They both do Commercial Shots which pays very well...but not so often. I offered to assist for free when they get anything.... still waiting over a year later.

Got a Deviant Art account now and put some stuff up there. Guess I need to order a Photographers Market. Is the 2010 one out yet...I will check. Not too far from the Blue Ridge Parkway... and the leaves will be turning soon. Landscape would be my best bet I am thinking.

My goal..make enough money to move to a better area (Rent an Apartment at least) with my Wife, little girl and a Miniature Pinscher...and sustain money until I am set in a area (a few weeks or so). Thinking of somewhere in Texas maybe. Not set on it yet.

a.k.a.-Tom: you are right, you will offend some people. The same photographers that are offended by microstock photographers.

I think you have found a niche and I say good for you. I find the whole "upsell" approach to be increasing every day, every time I go out to the mall or anywhere. I go for an oil change for my car and they push me to get a new transmission. I go for skirt at the mall and they push me to buy a top and jacket. I just want the skirt.

The key to survival for any of us is going to be the ability to come up with creative ways to sell. Yes, one might have to shoot 50 headshots just to get the same dollars that 1 wedding would produce, but that's what's going to have to happen.

Yeah... I dont mean to offend anyone and I surely do not mean to flaunt in any way.  I know many of these guys 'have to '  go for that kind of money to stay in business due to overhead.  And of course, some ..are down right greed mongers.
And to a degree I do feel for those first dudes.  But, life goes on.

Unfortunately as in LSD72's case,  it's all a matter of where you live and what the economic situation is in your locale.

On the other hand, while he is looking to move out of Tennessee,  Im looking to do the opposite. Looking to move out of New Jersey and into a laid back country setting.  Then again, I'll be 61 next week and its time to slow down and enjoy the rest of my life......  8)=tom

Edited: I dont want to offend anyone.

Tom..it's not Tennesse in general... I am only speaking of this corner I am in. Headshots would probably rule in Nashville area and probably around Knoxville... Mephis... and possibly Chattanooga. Tourist stuf... deff. around Pigeon Forge. Weddings might be killer in those same areas 'cause thats where the money is at.

My area..2 times a Year... NASCAR (Bristol) and thats about it for anything Major. Every once in a while there are some good Drag Races at Thunder Valley.

There is a website.. I think it's city-data.com or something where you can find out info from real people who live or have lived in where ever your looking at.

I love that area.... been down in there twice in the last 2 years,  rent houses up in the hills 15 min outside of Gatlinburg...  my photo passion is the great outdoors, national parks, etc. My NP pix do well (although I'll never retire depending on them LOL). Cades Cove in fall, Clingmans Dome, the BR parkway...over to Mt Mitchell... fantastic photography!!  Forbes recently used one of my cityscape shots of Memphis from Mud Island... so there's money to be made...  just wont be buying that new Aston Martin DB9 any time soon.
Memphis, Knox, Nash... are NOT hick towns... try looking into magazine/newspaper publishers. That work you can mail in.  I've never even been to the publishing offices that I work for. I signed my contract in a local starbucks and mail in CD's.
Dont give up, bro. Just keep on clicking!!  8)=tom

I do fairly well making extra money supplying images for my local tourism board. I got my foot in the door with them a couple of years ago and now Im one of their main "go-to" guys for images and photoshoots because I bend over backwards for them.  They put out a visitor guide every year and I always get a good 10 or so sales there.
If your local town has a chamber of commerce or some sort of tourism budget, check out that avenue.

Spent 25 years of my life in southern California and moved to the southeast in 1993. Have lived in Knoxville, TN for 12 years and like it more the longer I live here. That doesn't mean ya'll have to move here.  ;) Very competitive area for photographers, by the way. We have a group called the Southern Appalachian Nature Photographers.

I shoot weddings for a living.

http://www.pictureinfinitystudios.com

I have 5 photographers working for me and 1 partner.  The 7 of us shoot an average of 15-25 weddings each at around $3k in Syracuse NY.  It's sustainable and decent income.  Weddings = summer, portraits and stock = winter.  :)
