I haven't had any issues with getting images accepted to shutterstock when I convert from camera raw images (around 22 mb) to .jpg through Lightroom, but recently, a few of my images were only 3.9 mb, which did not fit the 4.0 mb criteria.  Therefore, I had to convert the CR2 file to a tiff instead to get the size up to 18 mb.  When I submitted 5 pictures in tiff, they rejected it because of poor lighting issues.  The pictures are really good, and I hate for them to go to waste just because I can't size it up further.  Any ideas of what is going on?

Just want to be sure as to whether you are interpreting the File size (in Mega Bytes - MB) and File Dimensions (in Mega Pixels - MP) to be the same. What SS needs is atleast 4 MP in File Dimension. File size will vary. Today I submitted a JPEG file that was 1.88 MB only but had 2738 X 1825 = 5 MP.

Sorry if your MB was a typo that should have been MP.

"Images must be at least 2.5MP (2.5 Megapixels/2.5 Million Pixels). To calculate the number of pixels in a photo - multiply the width by the height. For example - a photo that's 1700x1300 is 2.21 million pixels. The minimum size for new photographers is now 4.0MP."

That's from the shutterstock website...does anyone know how they define 'new photographer'?  So am i reading this right...images must be at least 2.5 MP, but for new photographers it must be 4.0 MP?

I don't understand, why are some images 22MP and some only 3.9MP? Cropping or what's going on that they are so small?

Plus if you take a 4MP image and make it 18MP you are going to blow up the artifacts and flaws. You should only make them barely over 4MP if it's so important to have them accepted. Even if upsizing is according to the rules, not legitimate, 5% isn't going to hurt anything.

But still. Why are some 22 and some only 4? That doesn't make sense unless you are doing some sever cropping?

What camera do you use?

Yes, doesn't matter if you are old or new or how long you've been a SS member. All images minimum 4MP

I can address this one- for example, so you shoot a knife on a wooden board and the file size is 15mp than you take that same knife and should on white it will be only about 4mp due to no background present. That is why is it very important to get in close on objects that are going to be isolated on white...

Here we go getting megapixels and megabytes mixed up again.

Megapixels (MP) are a function of the physical size of the sensor/image.  It's the height multiplied by the width of the image.  If the image is cropped, then the MP will also drop.  If the two knife shots mentioned above are shot with the same camera, they will have exactly the same MP's.

They will not, however, have the same megabytes (Mb).  The description above is correct if you are looking at Mb.  The more data/information on the image, the greater the number of megabytes.

to belittle is to be little.
Why is it necessary to shame someone for asking a question ... is that being "Professional?"

very true indeed, but i was not belittling rather i was in shock by the lack of knowledge. i just find it ironic that one does not know how to convert a file to tiff, yet qualifies for a professional site. questions are good, but one would think if you are attempting to be professional you would at least know the very basics.

it reminds me of a post on the IS forum a few years back, when a photographer asked how to get that sharp in focus look with a blurry background? what???

microstock in genaral has dropped the bar as for standards, and it's questions like this that make it blatantly obvious. welcome to the generation of everyone can be and is a photographer.

Digital66 has stated a fact, and i concurred.

If you are a photographer and dont know about DOF, then yes, if you dont know all the zillion file types and how to convert etc, thats understandable to some point.

My dad use to develop his own photos, I cant do that, but if I tell him about jpg, png, tif, cr2, gif, bmp, etc his head explodes.

Is Microstock Group Forum for Professional Only?
I thought it was a place to share and answer questions.
Do we need to intimidate every newbie?

And, just like Microstock Group Forum, the microstock business introduced a source for ALL photographers to sell images.  The REAL professionals have "Professional" outlets.

Maybe it was a dumb question.  Probably should have Googled it.   ::) ??? ;D

When I started out in photography, and began to mix with the pros, they talked about tiff and mb and cmyk.
We had long discussions in the evenings about dpi and ppi.
I found it quite confusing.

it all easened up when I joined microstock, and everything was meassured in pixels. A picture had a size in pixels, fx 6000 x 4000: 24 mpix and was in jpg format.

Then customers can have fun with their part of the trade: tiff conversions, colourspace or how many pixels per inch they print.

To the OP. Dont bother with tif, it will only make it worse. Look at your pictures size in pixels and take it from there.

You didn't say convert from what. In fact, it makes me ask Why TIFF? Why compressed TIFF?
