It's that time of year. We're leaving next week for our annual "Long Trip." Doing South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Maybe Yosemite and Death Valley.
Any suggestions for photo shoots ... nature, wildlife, festivals, "editorial events"????

South Dakota http://www.1880town.com/ (http://www.1880town.com/) You can rent costumes (cheap, like 5 bucks maybe) and walk through the town. You might get caught in a gunfight. I wished I had model releases with me when I was there, there was a lot of college-age kids in costume and I bet they'd be easy to wrangle into signing one for some copies.
The agencies could surely use another Mount Rushmore, no? ;)
Badlands park is quite stunning and what's the other park near there (Custard?) - lots of wildlife, you have to stop to let buffalo cross the road.
My sister told me Deadwood wasn't worth going to but we went any way. She was right.

Nope nothing there but sagebrush and desert, don't take a camera. :o
If you get to Yosemite, look for Yogi and BooBoo, or was that Jellystone? ;)
Honest: In the national parks, from what I've read, many of the classic shots are just about the only shots, so if you can find a different angle that's not from a staged site, you may have something unusual. Oregon has loads of amazing views and open logging trails if that's your interest?
Above all, have a safe trip and have fun.

We really get into National Parks ... even volunteer in some. And have hosted BLM campgrounds. Plus, we have the Golden Age Pass. They are FREE. ;D
Thanks for the info, Pixart. We just reading about three people getting shot (really shot) during one of the gunfights. Makes you stop and think.
Just heard from my wife's brother. He was in Sturgis for the motorcycle rally. He did Rushmore and Crazy Horse. We can't go to SD and not visit there. Have a friend who hunts the Black Hills area. May go on a bow hunt and get some pics. Who knows. Just keep the ideas coming.

Yeah, that part of SD is really worth it. There is lots to see and do, but it is all spread out. I seem to recal that you travel with an RV. You pretty much only sleep in one spot for a night or maybe two and move on to the next destination. We drove south from there to Nevada and the whole trip was non-stop beautiful views - and then we hit Las Vegas, but that's another story....

Where are you going, Luis? Pixart got me to thinking about the western scenes; editorial travel stuff; I've had some decent sales at SS with editorial sports. Wondering if editorial might be my start into video? Need to search on "gunfights." ;D
Would love to be traveling in your "neck of the woods" but that will have to be another time.
@Pixart: we do travel in an RV. Our MO is to find a central spot and park the Trailer. Use it as the "base camp" and make day trips until we've satisfied our curiosity.
We're going in reverse of your trip, coming North thru Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. We may come thru Las Vegas on the return to TX.

We're in Spearfish, South Dakota, a few miles west of Sturgis and on the Wyoming/Montana/SD border. This is our first stop with showers. The "finance minister" runs a very strict budget. ::)
Posted a rushed edition of the blog from our first stop ... Wind Caves National Park. Internet connections are few and far between.

Nearly there. We're camping tonight just north of Great Falls. Will camp in St. Mary tomorrow night. Maybe we can do a flyover? ;) ;D ;D

Warren, great posts and photography!
I've always wanted to hop in an RV and just roam the USA taking photos. If you're up for it, would love to see a post with more detail about life on the road doing camping/RV.

That answers the question of how you parked and went to sites around an area. Trailer job. Nice! I wasn't sure if it was a fifth wheel or how you were doing it. Some people have a motor home and tow a small car. You mean that house on wheels doesn't have a shower?
OK so I'll be watching! :D nice pictures. Terribly jealous, wish I was out there instead of camping with the poison ivy in Wisconsin!

Hi Warren- glad you final made it to Glacier National Park. Sorry about the rain snow and cold-but that is Montana. There is a saying around western Montana-"I miss summer this year -I was sick that day". Hope you got some great photos

@Smiling Jack ... weather hasn't really been that bad. And, it gives a better perspective of life in "The Great White North." ;D
@PaulieWalnuts: I did include some "life on the road" stuff in the last two chapter. That was before reading your post. There wasn't a lot of detail but you should get some idea.
@Race: We have showers and a hot water heater. Problem is, we're self contained. It drains into a holding tank that has to be emptied much more frequently when using the "in house" facilities.

I'm jealous, I want to do a short road trip but we don't have those things on the East Coast and the rain is coming for the whole week. Have fun it looks like a great trip.

We're between stops -- Leaving Mount Rainier National Park en route to Olympic National Park. Taking a few days in commercial park for invigoration and communication.

Warren-Glad you are enjoying your trip. Having lived in western Montana,Oregon and Washington most of my life,I sometimes think we take all the scenic beauty for granted.

We've made the turn toward Texas. "Go See It" enthusiasm is waning. Still 1700 miles from home but where ever we decide to stop next will be on that trail. :P

Best advice I have is Look for stuff that no one else see's or has done. Think out of the box.
