I recently received an email from the ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers) concerning a petition by the Copyright Alliance which I believe is of concern to all of us.
Here's a relevant excerpt:
"Many major brands are advertising on websites that are dedicated to distributing creative works illegally. The Copyright Alliance (of which ASMP is a member organization) has launched an online petition to tell these brands that they should stop advertising on these sites. Sign the petition here: http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50260/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=9402 (http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50260/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=9402)
It takes less than a minute to sign the petition and let advertisers know that they should not be aiding these sites.
The Copyright Alliance Site http://copyrightalliance.org/resources (http://copyrightalliance.org/resources) also has other great resources for photographers as does the ASMP site https://asmp.org/ (https://asmp.org/)
Thanks!

Although I don't think it will make much of a difference. :(
Then, of course, I might be surprised. No harm in signing this petition, either. 8)

...Although I don't think it will make much of a difference...
Possibly true, but like you said, it still doesn't hurt to try.
On a related note, one thing you can do if you see ads on a piracy site is to take a look at the ads and see if you can determine the company being used to do the ad insertions, and contact them. For example, one of the most popular ad companies that does the groups of square ads you see on the right side of many websites is BuySellAds. You can tell if they are handling the ad if you click on it and look at your address bar as you do, you might briefly see the BuySellAds URL for a split second before it redirects to the advertiser's site.
I've contacted BSA a few times when I found my work on pirate sites and they'll terminate relationships with sites that are proven to engage in piracy.
I have to say, it feels * good to be responsible for cutting off a revenue stream for these jokers. :)

That's a good idea to keep in mind next time I do the maso-thing and search for my images on the web. Not that I think it'll change much but as you said it'll feel good 8)

Actually it does hurt them financially. I just checked one of the sites I reported last year and he's resorted to taking ad buys via PayPal buttons on his site. It's much more labor-intensive for him, and no way is he getting anywhere near as much exposure and income from the ads. What few ads he has (lots of empty "Advertise Here" spaces.

Seems it like it is only for Americans, but I signed it anyway :)
