Title: So, 6D or 5DMKII?
Post by: Poncke on February 21, 2013, 09:32
Hi Guys,

I am about to splash 1400 euro on a body and its either the 6D or 5D MK II. I was 100% sure I was going to get the 5D MK II and now I am on the fence !

I am a bit worried over the poor low light AF performance of the 5DMKII and the shutter drag and the ISO performance compared to the 6D which is supposed to be superb.

Only problem for the 6D is the focus cross reference points, which is only one. And with the 6D I cannot use any of my EF-S lenses. It only takes EF.

In two weeks time I have the money to buy either body, but if I have to go for the 6D, I will have to wait and save more until I can get it with the 24-70 USM II.

But in terms of image quality, features, performance -  6D or 5D Mk II?

Thanks,
Ron

You can't use your EF-S lenses on the 5D Mark II either

If it were me I would go with the 6D - sounds like it is much improved.  A comprehensive review with comparisons to the other models is here (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-6D-Digital-SLR-Camera-Review.aspx (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-6D-Digital-SLR-Camera-Review.aspx)).  Have fun whatever you decide.

I'd go for the more robustly built 5D if I wanted a sturdy workhorse for microstock stills that will last me for several years. I've had my 1Ds MkIII for over 5 years and have no plans to replace it. The 5D MkII is a steal right now whilst stocks last.

If I was more interested in video and low-light work then I might buy the 6D instead but I probably wouldn't expect it to last as long.

You need to go to the shop and handle both cameras before coming to a conclusion.

1400 EURO ok for new 6D
too much for used 5D MII.
Both are superb choice.

That had slipped me, so then I need to wait regardless. If thats the case, I might just save up for the 5DMKIII with 24-70 USM II

The only EF lens I have is the 50mm 1.8

I do want to do footage as well as low light photography ;-)

Really on the fence here, but going to the shop is good advice

as a markII owner I have to say I would go for the 6D if I had the choice today: smaller, wireless, app, better lowlight-AF and high iso.

What about image quality?

I own both.  The 6D seems to produce less noise in my long exposure night shots.  There's a lot of incremental advancements... like built in GPS, easier video controls.  Both cameras are great.  If I had to choose I'd keep the 6D.

I think it will be the 6D. But since I dont have EF lenses, I will go for glass first, which was my first plan anyways. I changed my mind and wanted to get extra pixels first. But since I dont have EF lenses, I better get that first then. Since EF will fit on my 450D.

Lenses first is a good approach. Apart from the fact you can use them :) by the time you've got them and saved up for a new body, a 6D MkII might be available.

Baldrick, I always listen to what you have to say, and I will take your advice. You are a great debater and I just love reading your posts.

Thanks.
