Title: Using blog screenshots in magazine
Post by: gubh83 on August 05, 2010, 05:33
Hi!

I'm working on a magazine, designing its layout, and the journalist has made a list of blogs for an article. I'd like to use screenshots of the blogs mentioned to illustrate this article. Do you guys know if I can do that or is it necessary to ask for the bloggers' authorization?

In the article we're going to mention a list of cool blogs to visit when planning a trip. I'd like to use the screenshot, insert a little description of the blog and it's address.

thanks!

I believe that writings by a person are considered copyrighted, just as photos would be, so I believe that you would need permission from the blog site. If you are giving them credit and sending more traffic their way, I think they would be happy to do it. Depending, of course, on the content matter of your magazine.

Which brings up another interesting question...do you also need permission from any copyright holders of photos that the blogger used on his site?

There is some sort of fair use:

But everything I have read leaves the interpretation pretty loose.

As an 'editorial' usage, you should be ok.  As a writer you've probably done similar before for articles.  Nice to ask permission if you have the time.

I'd always ask if I can contact the person/owner.

Only if you are unable to trace sources and it's editorial, then just go for it.

I'm just going to use a preview of the blog, like an icon, not bigger than 5cm, so no information would be really readeable... Its a list of blogs with a little icon with a preview of the site
