Hi All,

My company has just launched a new Macro RM/RF collection titled Spaces Images. You can find it at www.spacesimages.com to see a portion of the work. We are excited to start this collection with the support of Corbis for our launch. We are however multi ditributional so our RM and RF will be carried by many distributors across the globe.
The collection is much different than my usual lifestyle work actually there is not a person in any of the work. The collection is based on the environments where people live, work and play. After spending 12 years analyzing our personal sales of now 15,000 images we realized by far our best sellers were locations without people that were Property Released when need be. That was the birth of the concept and after a year and a half of work we are now representing 40 wonderful photographers and are launching with 4,000 images.
We offer all our contributors a 50/50 split so that photographers can continue to be able to afford making stelar photos in this tightening economy. If anyone here is interested in being part of the team please contact us throgh the web site. We already have a couple of MSG members signed and they are exceeding all expectations making the collection stronger every day.
If you are interested in just learning more please drop me a PM and we can discuss in more detail. No cost to the contributor, we cover all key wording and distribution and you provide us with the finished image and a Property Release where needed, simple as we could make it for the contributor. I hope to hear from some of you, there is a great deal of talent on this site and it is a way to break into the Macro market if that is of interest. Also no expensive models to deal with :D

Cheers,
Jonathan

Good for you for trying new avenues.  Hope you find it successful.

Seriously though, your most profitable images are non people shots?  That surprises me. I would expect most images without people are very specific to a paticular location.  Where do you find these images of just locations being used?

I saw the spaces collection last week.  I like that style a lot - very interesting and intriguing I think.

Are the images uploaded to the spaces collection required to be exclusive?

Does RF means non-exclusive?

Hi SJ,

It is the strangest thing when we started noticing the trends. Since I have been involved mainly in Macro RF for this kind of content I don't know who it is that buys up all these images but they continually sell. From floor manufacturers to paint companies it is very consistant but still surprising.
When we first presented it to Corbis they got it right away and showed us the numbers on the returns of these kind of images and across the board this concept was selling well for many photographers. I made 7k off a shot of someone's deck to their home in Macro RF and it is still bringing in sales. I only took the photo because my models were late :D
I will let you know as we begin to gather data where we see these images used most. Thanks tons for the support, that means a lot to me coming from you.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Hi Leaf,

Yes they are exclusive to Spaces but we hope to have 100 resellers around the world selling the same content through our distribution channels. Our RM is also multi distributional which is very new to the stock game. It used to be that your Macro RM stayed at just one seller and never had a chance to really be discovered by all the buyers out there.
It has been realized that buyers of RM that want control of a time period for a certain location or territory are less than 5% so when these sales are made your image is pulled from the other sites until the buyers time is up and then they automatically reload at the other agencies. The best part is if they use exclusive rights it means a much bigger pay check so it is a good thing when your work is being pulled from other sites. It means you are making top dollar on sales. I hope that answers the question, PM me if you want more info.

Best,
Jonathan

Hi melastmohican,

Please check these last two responses and see if that answers your question, global distribution to as many sites as actually make reasonable returns. There are about 87 agencies at this time that will make money and we hope to be represented by all of them. But you can't send your image you gave to Spaces to another agency, we take care of all of that end through multi distribution so you don't have to. One statement from us that covers all your sales to all our distributors and you just upload once to us.
Blend Images is doing it and now so are Cultura and I believe a couple others, I think it will be one way photographers can do what they do best take photos and leave the rest to us which by the way is being supported by Rahul and the Lookstat team. Hope that helps.

Best,
Jonathan

I got only few exclusive images with Getty Flickr Collection cause I realized that most images they asked for were already published somewhere. It looks I need to start set aside images and build portfolio to apply here. I really like the idea but there is nothing I can do at the moment :-(

Hi Jonathan,

I've read your post with great interest.
You choose a niche category, and as somebody already mentioned, it is hard to find enough material that is going to be of your interest. I am doing some commercials for local gyms, but they are not providing me with property release, so I can just forget about those. From now on I will be thinking about those types of images and I will try to collect some, and some day submit them to your agency Spaces Images.
I believe in your success, you do not sound like you are just fooling around like many of us, it looks like you already researched that in detail. And of course having Corbis as support is a huge plus.

And, congratulations Jonathan, I wish you all the best.

Hi melastmohican,

Please send me a PM if you want more info on what we are looking for. You don't need a ton of photos for the collection, just good ones with property releases. Locations the average bear might not gain access but through relationships or friends you would be surprised who will sign a release if they get a bunch of free images for signing. Yes, we give our locations free discs of all the images we shoot to motivate them to want to have their location shot. A win/win situation for both and no cost up front for the photographer just a cd. Please stay in touch.

Best,
Jonathan

Great news Jonathan!
And great idea. I must say that these pictures look great in square format. I used to shoot with medium film camera and I miss that feeling a lot. Since you are looking for retouched files, do you prefer square cropped ones, or that was just for representation?
Thanks!

Really interesting concept Jonathan. I checked some of the photos and they are really beautiful. I will check the collection more and will keep my eyes (and mind) open. I'm usually more a portrait photographer but it's always interesting to explore new avenues.

Hi Kone, Love to talk anytime. Please feel welcome to contact us if we can answer some questions.
By a coincidence, I know the port of Kone. He has great non-people images, especially his macro/objects, that are exceptional. There are some hidden treasures here.

Hi FD,

This site is full of talent without a doubt I am very pleased to here the support MSG is giving the new collection. Unfortunately as with all new web sites we have our first glitch and the thumbs are not loading properly. I will have our web designer fix it in the morning but the images are still viewable they just show up on a light background instead of a black one and the site is loading very slow. Thanks goes out to Rob here on MSG for letting me know, thanks Rob.

Best,
Jonathan

Hi FD,
Thanks for those kind words, and not that I am just returning the favor, but you might have more of Jonathan's niche stuff than I. You travel a lot and you might have some stuff for him. All I have is RF and RM stuff (already submited to other agencies) but as I understand Jonathan is looking for exclusive images, so maybe in the future, I will have something. Actually, I will be very happy to support Jonathan and his team but I have to collect some images and until then, I have nothing to show to Jonathan.
All the best.
Kone

Thanks Sharply,

It is the photography, I kept looking at our names. No matter how many times you proof these things there is always something. Thanks and if anyone spots another I will buy my designer a dictionary and me a pair of glasses :)

Best,
Jonathan
