I just an article that predicted the cost of the D3 Canon will be $9,000! Come on! And this is the camera to compete against the Nikon D800 which cost $3,000? Well, it better do the following for $9,000-

What would a camera have to do for you to pay $9K....?  Esp when a D800 costs $3K ... hmm...   It would have to have a sphere-shaped super accurate sensor that fits one lens for 12-600mm zoom  at f1.4.   and it'd look like an eye-ball.

A integrated coffee machine would actually help...the least you can ask for for this price tag of a cam :D

30,000 DLs @ $0.30 and its paid for itself!

I know not everyone (or even most people) can afford a $9K camera body, but its still less expensive than a new medium format setup, particularly if you can use all the same lenses. I wouldn't be eager to spend that much but rumored specs I've seen for that body might make it worthwhile and I can afford it if need be. Granted, I'm not relying exclusively on microstock income to pay it off.

I feel the rumors are still pretty much all over the place.  They keep going back and forth and saying the camera will be announced a Photokina, then photoplus, then not at photoplus.  3D, 1S, 5Dx

Anyhow, I'd be tempted to buy it if those pixels were all quality pixels and it compete with the lower pixel count but good with noise cameras (like the 5D Mark III).  But again, at that price, you could get a medium format digital camera like a Hasselblad or Pentax.  The canon would be more versatile but the sensor would be a fair bit smaller.

If the sensor is good enough to justify $9,000, it would be too good for my lenses and it would cost a lot to replace them.  I like buying the cheapest camera body possible.  I did buy a 5DMKII but that was relatively cheap compared to the alternatives with similar resolution.

So is mine but, with about 200K shutter operations to date, it is probably good for a few more years yet. When that camera originally became available it was roughly that price in the UK but it dropped by 25% within 3-4 months. Of course the same sensor ended up in the 5D MkII at a fraction of the price less than 2 years later. The same will probably happen again.

Asking price used is still $2500 to $2700 used and in my opinion, still the perfect camera for what you both do.

I'd agree. I've been using the MkIII for nearly 5 years now and can't imagine being without it or what could motivate me to replace it. It's overkill for what I do anyway to be honest.

If you can't afford the $9,000 there is a taxpayer-funded government program to provide up to 100% of the purchase price. Find out more at: www.wheresmine.gov.

But if it makes you happy, then use it!  ;D

The 1 series sensors just seem brighter and sharper than the T#i, ##-D, and 7-D. (the last three all with the same crop sensors) I've never seen a 5-D photo jump out the same way, but I'm usually looking at people who shoot sports and I don't know anyone who carry's a 5-D for sports.

Anyway, $9000 3-D (and hey Tab62 Canon has the "D" after the name, Nikon before) has been a rumor for at least five years. What people here have added is fairly close to the simple answer. For that, someone could afford a real Medium Format digital camera?
