Hi All,

I have had several requests for one of my shot lists and instead of re-sending them out to many different people I will just post one. Now remember, this is not about new creative ideas although it is based around what is selling well at the moment in Micro.
The part to look at is the workflow that this list allows us to produce the most different scenarios in any given day as well as free me up to have fun with the models and keep the focus on them and the lighting. Along with keeping paid models working as much as possible ( It bugs me to have a paid model napping in the corner ).
It is boring reading so if interested I suggest a skim to get the feel of how we keep moving at a fast clip. Before a few of you start getting critical remember I am not making a dime off of this and I am just offering it as a service to help maybe give people some new ideas.
I realize some of you can't run out and start producing at this level right now in your young careers but you might find one small nugget of help if you look hard enough. We ended with 176 selects from this 2400 frame shoot day it was 6 hours of shooting time with pre and post production added on both ends.
When my wife and I first started shooting stock 10 years ago we would be happy with ten shots from a day. Last time I posted one of these on this site I was criticized heavily and I am prepared this time for that but I sure would love to see this site turn more towards support and education rather than conflict and harassment. A good joke is always a plus as well.

P.S. The originals were color coded as well so each person in the crew can find their part of the production easily but that part didn't copy over when I pasted it.

Best,
AVAVA

Het CD,

If I could just figure out how to avoid those bathroom breaks I think thre is room for more ::) Thanks for the support folks I am glad there is someone out there that can get a little something from this. Remember to incorporate this concept into your own style of shooting. It still helps to have a direction even if you are shooting 3 shots a day. If you read the entire thing you will also find it works well as a sleeping aid. ;)

Hi Jonathan,

The shot list, the video, and all the info you give, makes one think that it is almost possible to become a high (maybe mid high) volume producer. Where is the catch? What else dose one needs to have, or do, to get there?

I want to be AVA (3/5 of AVAVA) when I grow up.

Hi Noam,

You are a cool cat. Just be careful about the praise guys, I like to help but it is the praising that gets people to attack me. ;D

I don't know what to put up next week but I'll come up with something. Of coarse nothing as cool as the chicken pod. How can you beat that. ???

Happy Thankgiving to al those here in the States and to all you Ex-pats outside the borders to.
Peace everyone,
J

Not criticising, but I've done sessions like that, and rigth now, I prefer to concentrate in quality and getting the rigth shot I have in mind, although that costs me tenwty or 40 minutes and a number of tries and approaches. I've even made one shot in a three hours outdoors nigth session. I 've discovered that so done, the shots sell way better.

 Hi Loop,

I agree with you but you have to measure your cost to return ratio. That is the bottom line. I produce the images that the model ( Micro ) I am shooting shows strong sales over the next year. The Micro we researched in school seemed that it had some holes I think we produced strong enough work for the Micro model and the competition at this time. I just did my last studio shoot and got 250 selects from our day. That was the quality you saw in the video of school shots I posted for a final cost of $10.80 an image total overhead. I made 250 images for $2700 dollars that will return $18,750 in the first year  ( accourding to the sales we have followed in our tests not only our own but several professional photographers we know that have been producing in Micro for the past year ). I think that is a pretty good return. Oh wait I forgot 60 cents an image for keywording you have to take $150 off of that profit margin $18,600. That is all straight profit after paying for every little thing you could think of as far as all costs involved.
I shoot RM that produces a much higher return per image and spend an entire day getting 10 shots that costs more to produce but the return offsets the cost and they have a much longer shelf life. Plus they are far more creative and fun to produce.
Can you share with me why having this approach didn't work for you. Do you feel the quality we are producing is not up to the Micro industry standards. Look at one of the charts that show what Micro stock shooters average per image on return. If you spend more time ( which is money ) you will cost your company more money in the long run. That is what my information has shown me by studying this model every day for the past year.
I could be completely wrong this has just been my approach and so far seems to be working well for us. Once again it is only R&D for us at this point in Micro but the numbers are there, even with very conservative estimates and 1 year of data.
Since you feel there might be a better solution would you please send me a PM sharing who you are or maybe a link to some of your work. I love to be inspired by a true professional that really works an image. That is my goal to only produce that kind of work. Any link to your work would be very helpful to me.

P.S. I really tried in my original post to point out that this works for me. It might not be for you but maybe there is a nugget of info that might be of help. I will try to make that point clearer next time. My offer was only to present people options and to make them maybe see something they might not of thought of before. I know that is why I read all the post. Nuggets of info. I find them in every walk of life. Did you see the thing yesterday with the washer and piece of string as a Monopod " Brilliant ". Posts like those and anything informative are so helpful.

Jonathan,
Thanks for posting the videos and your shot list and for all your insights into this business.
You have studied and analyzed this industry in ways that most of us could never conceive. Certainly gives one pause to reconsider how we are going about this.
I look forward to reading more of your posts.

Thanks
Steve

Thank you SC,

I appreciate the supportive comment. If you ever want another one just PM me and I'll send it along. I have over 200 of these some for studio Micro and some for location Macro RF, RR and RM. All are approached differently. And thank you everyone for your kind PM's.

Best,

Jonathan, again you amaze me with your generosity!  Many thanks for sharing your experience.  Definitely there is something to learn here and in your videos for people of all levels.

I don't have near the space you have, but I am certainly thinking in terms of more efficient uses of the space and time I do have thanks to your inspiration :)

Your work is just stunning and will be an asset to any site you upload to!

Thanks again,

I have been getting some PM's and thank you all for those as well. I really love to be able to give back to this great industry anyway I can. As I have been telling my PM's I have over 200 shot lists saved. Some are Micro like I shared and others are Macro RF, RR and RM. All are approached differently from cost and timing as well as talent, location and lighting. If anyone would like another version please drop me a PM and I will be happy to share.

Best,

Why don't you alphabetize and categorize the and post them all on a website?  It would save you from being innundated with so many mails, and free up your time for shooting.  I'm sure it would be a great reference for any one doing shoots on any of those 200 subjects.

 Hey Sean,,

I might if I can find the time I am always happy to share info with my fellow photographers. I am not going to be shooting as much anymore so there might finally be some free time after a bit of golf. I will need help as I am internet stupid on the web building end, I have spoken with a designer here in Seattle but one of the people that liked my shot lists and info I offer here on the site was kind enough to offer his services to help build such a critter for free. Pretty cool. I have met some super people on this site.

Hi Yuri,

Yes I also pre-scout my locations and shoot images to help build my shot lists then when we are doing the location shoot the shot list is written with each concept followed by a corresponding photo of the basic angle and location. Studio stuff my first assistant pretty much sets and I just tweak it a bit the night before. I find it really lets me work with the models and have fun with them the more prepared I am. Thanks for all the great info on your site.

Best,
Jonathan
