Title: "Instagram star used stock image photos"
Post by: namussi on June 22, 2018, 06:56
"A popular Instagram photographer has apologised after being caught posting stock image library content and indicating it was his own work.

"Singapore-based Daryl Aiden Yow has more than 104,000 followers on the Facebook-owned service.

"His fame on the platform had led Sony, Oppo and Uniqlo - among other big brands - to work with him.

"Mr Yow admitted to the deception after the news site Mothership identified a dozen examples."

??? First person on scene? You mean 'first person to be caught, and there will almost certainly be more'?

Luckily no one will be passing off my stuff as creative or original. Maybe I'm old but what kind of idiot gives any credence to these Facebook "influencers"?

The big companies, evidently. Sony etc, in this case.

Unilever said this week or last week that it would review its use of "influencers" as it suspected a lot of them were dodgy and some of their followers may even -- shock, horror -- be made up or bots.

More like "f****** piece of ****.  ;)

There are at least 100,000 accounts that do nothing but post pictures from other people, and some that have millions of followers. They don't specifically say that they took the images, however, but they don't go out of their way to say they DIDN'T take them either.  ::)

Pretty much every company in the world does. Instagram is a massive advertising platform.

If you have a popular Instagram account where you post images of fashion/clothes, you can get 4-5 figures for a sponsored post.

If you have an account with superb images, the camera companies will contact you and pay you to show that you use their products.

So long as seven from nine was on there I was happy ;-). Probably more plastic on the Kardashians than the original Enterprise model ship.

Hold on, no one mentioned big copyright problem. He modified image bought(?) from SS, and uploaded that same image on Unsplash! What will Unsplash do about it, and his account in general (Zack Arias was talking about this in his interview with Unsplash creator as potential problem)? Also this instagram guy could be sued by original photographer, right?

Am I glad that I am not on Instagram. Maybe I am too old for that but I never understood why some photographers can become so famous because of Instagram. What's going to happen to that fraud? No criminal charges??? There is a photography holiday website and they are using images I have seen on SS. They have not written that there are their own but I thought that they were the images they themselves have taken during their touring holiday. People will think that these photographers are great, that they can learn from them and will book a photography holiday based on the quality of the microstock photos. They chose awesome photos and I found all of them on SS. Isn't that also fraud even though they have not written that they took the photos?

Since he is a little more high profile (i.e., "made" the news) - maybe something would be done for that...

But I think (opinion, not sure) - since there wasn't any "direct" monetary compensation for it - that nothing would really happen other than him being embarrassed about being 'caught'. If he 'had' directly passed off images as his own & then sold them - I think it would be up to the individual photographers to pursue it (i.e., sue, etc) - which... is probably unlikely to happen - because they may not know their images are being ripped off. And - even if they did - as can be evidenced by many comments in this forums - most photographers seem more content to complain than actually do something about it (most likely because of limited time & money/resources to pursue it) - so probably nothing would really happen.

Bottomline - I think he will just be embarassed for being called out, temporarily lose a few 'contracts' - but get new ones simply because he has a large following, and there will be some people that want access to that and willing to pay for it.

All the family dirt started with Pop Robert. http://extratv.com/2014/06/10/robert-kardashian-sr-accused-of-hiding-evidence-that-would-have-convicted-o-j-simpson-of-murder/ (http://extratv.com/2014/06/10/robert-kardashian-sr-accused-of-hiding-evidence-that-would-have-convicted-o-j-simpson-of-murder/) Kardashian was photographed leaving Simpson's house while carrying a suitcase, which was never found.

Instagram star, this really has gone bad. I hope people don't forget this guy is a fake.
