nah, I think they're just displaying examples of new features, like they did with content-aware rescaling.

The technology is new in photoshop but its certainly not new in research circles, so that makes you wonder how much
those watermarks have been holding. I guess they should put a few forensics algos in photoshop now, or we'll all be
using errorlevelanalysis.com soon...

If you follow the many YouTube clips they have released shots of many enhancements that are useful. Brush tips selection, color select improvements, content aware re-scaling, smart object removal, easy horizon correction, panorama completion (missing parts), more.

As far back as Version 5 there's been a healthy debate about whether it's worth it or not to upgrade. IMHO it always has and will also be this time. What's the alternative?
I often speak to other photographers who still use V6 or V7 and who are oblivious to the time saving and really fun features we enjoy daily.

I have CS3 right now. This new feature alone would convince me to upgrade to CS5 once I start making some money freelancing. :)

Looks like I need checking :) I would be interested if photoshop was $100 but I would much rather buy a new lens or camera than pay for a program. I enjoy taking photos more than editing them. Elements and a few free plugins is all I need.

I'll believe it when I can actually see the pixels of the results. Tell me the blades of grass match up, or the noise in the sky blends, etc. and then I'll think about an upgrade.

That's a good point, perhaps this won't be stock-quality... But from an algorithm point of view, I don't see why it shouldn't be.. and in the worst case, why you couldn't augment it with very little work to make sure the fix is stock quality. Either way it will be a quick fix in many situations...

I am most interested in that fill feature for my landscape photography, not just for stock. I'm also sure that I will need to "touch up" details. But for me, that fill feature would be worth the upgrade just for the landscape side of my business.

I agree it looks pretty cool, but Sean's right, hard to tell how good a job it did.
I shoot mainly people, not landscapes, but it might come in handy for removing logs from tricky areas or taking out background wrinkles, etc. Definitely makes it worth considering.

Yap Im thinking the same , if i had to bet I would put my money that removing large objects will leave problematic areas fully visible at 100% of large photos , that it will leave some kind or too regular background patterns
that will not look natural (like on grass ) , so after u use that u will need additional work with clone and heal brushes , the question is only how much work. The good things it that the new tool will probably give
way better starting point and save some time , especially on simple backgrounds like clear sky etc ..

yes, i'm dubious (for 100% view), but then healing brush works well a lot of the time.

for home / non commercial use, I'd probably alternate upgrades.
But in each version there is a few things that I really quickly get used to (like masking options, click on image and adjust curves etc etc in cs4) and think it is worth the upgrade for those few little extras (Just bought cs4 at work this week (gee that was well timed :)) because cs3 at work and cs4 at home was annoying when missing those little cs4 things)

I'm worried too about watermark removal, especially because it's possible to make a script to stitch peaces of zoomed image and to download a full size. Now it will be very easy to remove watermarks.
One firefox addon does this with images from Istockphoto. It's made to zoom and stitch full size images on Istock. There is it https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12958

I don't need this... I am photographer and not designer... I do all my stuff in RAW processing and after that all my images get accepted ;-)
Well... For some cloning out which might be needed sometimes, GIMP is more than enough for the money it costs!

I couldn't get this to work very well (as in, the results aren't that great...). Does anyone have any other experience?

I am still waiting for the microstock-aware fill where I select the whole workspace by CTRL-A, then let it synthesize an istock-aware image with the exact feathering and no pixel distortions, and a shutterstock-aware fill with no shadows. Of course, the image should be unique and very salable. I don't mind if it's slow. I can always have a beer while waiting. 8)
