Many years ago, I read a post in Shutterstock forum written by Yuri Arcurs:
forums.submit.shutterstock.com/topic/17059-1170-dls-in-one-day-woohoo/
It was a post in which he shared that he had reached 1000 sales a day in Shutterstock. Wow! It was incredibly motivating for me to know that there was someone out there capable of achieving such high numbers. I promised myself that one day I would reach that level as well. I reached that level many months ago, but I had not shared it with anyone. So today I share with you the sales of September 30th: My best day ever 😍. I hope it will be an inspiration for many, just as it was for me.

I am currently doing several interviews about my story, in different blogs. If you have a website or blog and are interested in interviewing me, it will be a pleasure. Contact me via Instagram:

Are they all at 10c?
Probably not. Based on my numbers, and the others, it could be anything from rpi .5$ to $1.
Aaron, how big is your team, what are your monthly costs?

Thank you all! In the interview with Alex, he explained many of these things. Our profit per sale has dropped by about 8% since the new system. We sell a lot of $0.1, but the more expensive photos make up for it a little bit.

wow, so even very large sellers still saw a drop - that really shows that even the 40% high contributor level was a money grab by SS, and every level below that is so much more (plus the January reset - although YOU should climb the levels quickly at this rate).

in other news - congrats - that is the fruit of a whole lot of work - especially now.

Hmm... Maybe, I am confused, but 40,000 downloads/month with 1.4 millions images online doesn't look so high too me. Or, maybe, I am doing pretty good without models ...

Congratulations anyway.  :)

Honestly I never knew that having 1k dl's a day was a big thing. I think when I first crossed that mark was 3 years after I started shooting and with around 30k images total in my portfolio. My numbers have dropped by 30% since the change at SS. Adobe started giving away images for free, I wouldnt be so hyped for the future.

Cheers

I also was surprised to see him crossing 1k mark with 1 million images. The times have changed drastically. I now people having double of that with 100k images, working on their own, no teams at all, 5 to 6 years ago. But, they don't anymore. Every year it is more work and more investing for less money. There will always be new generations satisfied with less and less. It is still a lot of money that he makes, actually, really a lot, but there is obviously downward trend that will result in this business being not profitable anymore in the near future.

As soon as I upload 1,000,000 images I will have 3,600 downloads per day just from SS ...  :)

Estimated time: 244 years ...   :(

So, 244 years from now, you need more files to reach those 3,600 downloads per day. Paradox.

To achieve a given DL number at a given time in future you would need to overcome the increase of the sites databases increase in percentage - in a dream world that is, as the demand for new images doesnt increase exponentially. The population growth and demand for new media doesnt follow this pattern.

It is very easy to see that an individual (even a big corp) can not keep expanding at a rate so that the earnings stay steady. Microstock model is skewed, no nicer way to put it. Big corps will keep expanding as long as the expense of new image productions are profitable in X years ( you have to factor in inflation etc into this equation as well).  It is a rather complex business model to calculate but as long as you can have cheap production rates it might be worth adding images but with agencies competing against each other with cheap/free images we are already at dead end.

I am no longer motivated to work, upload, be creative etc. Producing high quality images for micro prices is totally not worth it, what one can do is pollute the database with mediocre images and hope that they get exposure among the other mediocre images.

Sad but true.

I was not lucky enough to join the micro business back  in the golden days, now its almost IMPOSSIBLE to make a living out of this industry. There is a 0.1% chance you will succeed and even if you do the future doesnt look bright.
Even in the case of a successful lift off, the potential to improve and expand the business can be (and is expected to be) destroyed by competing agencies' action to cut prices.
You just have to deal with it and understand that this business model is DEAD.

My advice to young folks is to invest their time in something else. Photography is ok, microstock is not.

For all those who criticize that there are few downloads for the number of photos, if you read the interview,  Aaron Amat have clear that it is a business in decline and that its days are numbered. He is not a novice who gets excited about a little over a thousand downloads, a few years ago he had 30,000 photos that he had produced alone and in proportion they rented much more than the new ones. He is simply squeezing the market through volume and he is not lying about it. Now that everyone is losing their minds with noisy and sigmas 35 "Real Stock" he has flooded the image banks with flash photos of people on colored backgrounds, who also have their market.

Thank you! JaenStock has done a very smart analysis. The industry has changed so much, we can no longer calculate in the same way as in the old days. Whenever someone calculates in that way this Simpsons scene comes to my mind:

https://comb.io/SqKAv3

Hahaha, simple extrapolations don't work, millions of images are uploaded to agencies every month. We must learn to live and produce with it or give it up. It is a very complicated industry, I am aware of that. In fact that is why we have opened our own website krakenimages.com. We know that things can change very quickly, and it's very risky not to have a lifeboat.

When you open your own website you realise that your problems are different. Now our main concern is to have enough images to create our own demand. It is very complicated, we need to produce a lot and cover all the concepts that exist. That is what we are trying to do now.  :)

I do not criticize him, never did. My reality is the same as his is (maybe with slightly better numbers) but essentially we are all in the same boat. I absolutely take my hat off to his achievement. Period.

I am purely stating that I am sorry for Him, You, Joe and myself. Its a sad reality we are all in atm trying to squeeze the last drop of green juice.

Let me be clear once again. I respect him no matter what, I just wish there was a segmentation of contributors based on their success in the market. There are plenty of metrics sites could use to filter out worse/bad content and promote better images/videos/contributors.

Why dont they? Well its simple. They earn more from lower tier contributors and new contributors attract more new contributors which in exchange further increases their profit percentages. The disadvantage of this is that buyers need to filter through many more images until they find what they need. It seems that they are still willing to sacrifice a little bit of their time. So this is not a huge drawback.

Exactly for this reason a more sustainable business might be macrostock.
Thats just my opinion, I might be wrong but I usually am not.

Me neither, I've never criticised him. We know exactly what he achieved and how much hard work is behind his success. It is a tremendous achievement. I was pointing out to the industry as a whole, based on his numbers.
nd3000 made a good point with how agencies need and use new contributors for more profit. But they will not have new contributors ones they get discouraged by these numbers. Kraken images (and me, and many others) was motivated by Yuri's post back in the days about 1000 downloads, it looked achievable. But I'm not (and probably many others, including newbies) motivated by these numbers - you need  1 million images to achieve 1k downloads. In few years time it will be - you need 10 million images for 500 downloads.

I don't see your posts as criticism. We are certainly in the same boat. I'd like things to be different too, but these are the times we have to live in.
