Here's a little preview of the data from the 2012 Microstock Survey

For a larger image you can click on the graphic on the blog

I'll post the full results next Tuesday and announce the winner of the reflector at that time as well.

Even after everything at IS, I'm surprised the 50/50 exclusive migration is so high for people leaving.

I filled it in before the most recent round of news, bit less positive now. I wonder how many others feel the same.

Love the graphics!

SUrvey was before the melt down. Planning to leave in Dec. could have changed by January.

That and some people who weren't "planning to leave" have been shown the door.  :(

Clearly lots of smart people plan for various things and only act on some. However the number of crowns gone or going is likely to rise. Just yesterday swilmor (diamond exclusive) announced he'd dropped his crown. Earlier this month theprint (Rasmus Rasmussen, one of iStock's earliest members, diamond) gave up his crown. Jani Bryson (JBryson), diamond exclusive, just dropped hers.

Yeah, that is quite high - a lot of people were seeing decreasing royalties though and perhaps it was enough to make them look for greener pastures.  The stat that isn't listed in this infographic though is the number of people who actually did change exclusive status.  That will be interesting to look at.  It will also be interesting to see how many people planned to changed exclusivity in the 2011 survey and how many people actually did change status as indicated by the 2012 survey.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Those who are dedicated to staying exclusive (at least for the time being) have not much reason to look outside the iStock forums for information, and no need to take part in industry surveys. So the people who decide to take part in something like this is a self-selected group of people who are already at a stage to look outside the iStock world. Overall it's just about 170 iStock exclusives who took part in the survey.

And another diamond exclusive announced her dropping the crown in another forum yesterday.

147 people have pony-tails, dont remember that one ;)

Thanks leaf
nice to see that many people are experiencing increases in income and that way people are positive about the future of microstock than I would have guessed, need to get out my negative mindset :)

I posted the survey on the iStock forum and there is no reason to believe that only people looking elsewhere would answer.  iStock exclusives should be just as interested in the results as anyone else as it shows how they stack up against their piers.

Did you post how exclusives stack up against independents anywhere, I didn't see it.

in terms of what?  There is a numbers count but earnings or other comparisons aren't there.  This is just the bare minimum in information from the survey.  The full data is coming next week and more comparison / breaking down of the data throughout the year.

BTW very nice infographic, congrats!

Either one.  The question on the survey was "do you have employees or work as part of a team".  In other words, you aren't a one man show.

Ok that's what I was wondering, if we could directly compare average earnings.  You say that will be released next week though?

Average earnings for exclusives vs. avg earnings for non-exclusives won't be posted next week.  Just the raw data from the questions will be posted next week.  In terms of earnings that will be everyone's average earnings, the median, lowest and highest.

Leaf, thanks so much for doing the survey every year.  The data is invaluable to helping us understand the industry.

It looks like exclusive earnings are now being posted in the poll, thanks for that update.  Now that it's being shown maybe you should make the highest level $5000+.

Yeah, they are being shown there.  It is a bit deceiving as now, at first glance, it looks like an exclusive makes 2-3x more than any non-exlcusive.  You have to remember to add up all the non-exclusive amounts (shutterstock+istock+dreamstime+fotolia+...) to see how much the non-exclusive total is.  It works out to be just a tad higher than the exclusive number... but pretty close to the same.

there is something that I do not understand...   :o
There are 204 people who are working full time in this industry (about 29%),
but only 7% said that microstock are the primary source of income...

Maybe they work as reviewers, assistants, bloggers etc.
