...The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Goosebumps during most of the movie, cinematography is outstanding, soundtrack is beautiful, its a movie about photography, about life, about daydreaming, about making choices, and the end brought tears to my eyes. Go see!

We went to see it the other night. Really enjoyed it. My favourite part: his slight misunderstanding and re-imagining of the plot of Benjamin Button.

That was funny indeed. My fav parts which gave me the most goosebumbs were his skateboard ride, the mountain hike and of course the end scene.

I quit going to movies cuz of the cost, people talking, people texting, etc.  They eventually come out on DVD and I can sit and watch at home.

I did, however, see Les Miserables on stage last night.  Best theater (stage) performance I have ever seen....and the audience was respectful of the performers and those around them.

Are you in Toronto?
I went to see the Toronto performance of Les Mis in November - the cast was outstanding and the performance was superb. One of my favorite stage plays because of the story behind it all. Thanks Victor Hugo

I'm in the Seattle area.  Jean Valjean was played by someone (Greg Stone) who had played that role on Broadway and on national tour.  He, and the entire cast, did a terrific job.

We go when we are in country or a city where we know that people are going to appreciate the thing properly - and not talk, text etc. We're in France at the moment and have been at the cinema 3 nights this week. In France people really appreciate cinema properly.

The last mainstream movie I watched in Dublin was Lemony Snicket. So that would have been about 10 years ago. I don't tend to go to the cinema in Dublin. And the last movie I saw in the Netherlands would have been Total Recall (the original), a very long time ago.

Some places treat cinema like art and the audiences behave. And obviously most cities also have independent cinemas which tend to attract more respectful audiences - but those places don't tend to show current movies.

Went to see it this evening. It was OK - my husband enjoyed it much more than I did.
It's really odd. I can suspend disbelief like nothing on earth, so can watch animations and pantomimes without problems but:
1. How come he had a passport? He'd never been anywhere other than Arizona, and lots of IDs are allowed for US citizens on internal flights.
2. Sean's lens was nothing like long enough for a Snow Leopard at the distance indicated and for the alleged 'view through the viewfinder' - and with locals playing football not 400m away.
Added: plus part of the plot pinned on him having his cellphone on all the time, yet his battery never ran out - and he seemed to get great reception everywhere!

Anyway, I haven't been to the cinema since seeing Les Mis twice within a week when it opened here, (I enjoyed it even more than the three stage productions I've seen) and discovered that The Long Walk to Freedom is showing at the same complex I saw this in, so can catch it sometime soon, hopefully.

Each to his/her own. I dont care if he used the right lens or not, its creative freedom of the director. If you dont like/see the bigger picture then I guess its not for you. Thats fine. I loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, its a 10/10 for me for the same reasons as Walter Mitty, but most people dont like/get that movie either.

Chill, I didn't hate it, my husband liked it a lot; he didn't notice the passport thing, but agreed about the lens.
One thing I did think hilarious was the close resemblance between the 'Ted Hendricks" character and one of the candidates in the last series of The Apprencice:

I thought we were the only ones.  We sit in the back so we won't be distracted by people talking behind us, but you can see constellations of phones lit up all over the theater as people check them and text.

Last movie I went to the theater to see was Bridesmaids a couple of years ago.  We sat next to a girl who texted and checked her phone throughout the movie.  About halfway through we told her *nicely* that it was distracting and she started yelling at us, which was REALLY distracting to everyone in the theater.  An usher finally made her stop, but it was the last straw for us.

Movies come to PPV or DVD so fast now, you don't have to wait long, and TVs are so large and clear, watching at home is way more fun than sitting in a movie theater.

I love Les Mis - have seen it twice on stage and also the movie, and loved it each time.  Agree that live theater is different.  Ushers there are serious about preventing distractions, and it draws a different, more courteous crowd.

FWIW, the best stage show we've seen in recent years was Rock of Ages.  We had season tickets.  Otherwise we never would have gone to it and we were shocked to enjoy it so much.  The other couple we went with loved it too.  The movie completely sucked though.

I really loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  I haven't seen Walter Mitty yet, but it sounds like you and I have similar tastes Ron, so I will be sure to see it as soon as it comes to PPV.  My husband always likes Ben Stiller in everything, so that's a plus also.

I agree with your husband. Greenberg by Noah Baumbach is particularly great IMO. Even though it only gets 6.1 on IMDB.

Anything by Noah Baumbach or with Greta Gerwig tends to be good. Therefore I also recommend Frances Ha if you have not seen it.

I have always loved James Thurber's short story so I am afraid to see the movie.
Hollywood doesn't have a great track record with literary adaptations and Ben Stiller at the helm doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.
