Title: 500PX---Is it worth uploading to now ?
Post by: oscarcwilliams on December 15, 2016, 04:29
500PX--With all the changes with funds to the photographer, is it worth your time to submit them?

I don't think 500px has decided, yet, what they want to be.  And maybe they never will, but will just keep muddling along, cutting commissions and adding restrictions, until they fold up.  Who knows at this point.  Until they announce some new direction that makes sense, I'm not going to spend the time uploading and organizing.

I had over 3,000 photos approved in my portfolio and today and sold a few during the year and last night every last one was declined.  I wrote support and got this answer.

"Although your images were good and approved and sold, our new team felt they were not suitable for consumers today"

I don't have any of the 3,000 images anymore--I do have about two months left on my paid subscription which I will cancel very soon.  All this work gone down the drain.

Well photographers---Stay clear!!!

That's astounding.  Imagine spending the time uploading 3000 photos, actually seeing some sales, then being dropped without even an explanation.    I hope the "new team" gets the message that I'm not having anything to do with their company.

3000 rejected after uploading, that is painful.

Their producer forums are completly dead, nobody there to look after the business.

I don't think they are serious about being an agency. Lots of places just want community vibe but are not really interested in sales.

Never heard of anyone making reliable money there.

I do like the community pages, it is still fun to browse there.

Yes, but I don't like the way they evolved. The culture their appears to be very cutthroat....

That site has never looked like anything other than a good way to let people steal your images to me.

No watermark and just a feeble right click copyright warning that's easy to bypass?

Even if the sales were great there it's reasonable to assume your overall sales would drop across all sites with people having such easy access to unprotected images.

From all the new stuff they've been trying to do during these past few months, it would probably be better to hold off. But by then, the royalty rates may be cut again.

I never considered 500px to be a stock site. So, if people stop uploading their microstock images there I'd be happy.

IMO the point of selling images there would be so that a buyer who wants a truly extraordinary image (and there are alot of them there) would be able to actually purchase something they see there. Nothing more.

you can't blame people for uploading their images, 500px reviews all submissions,  so they should control their library. i had plenty of rejections

I'm not "blaming people" for uploading there.
Just pointing out that not all sites need to be a microstock site.

Bottom line is that 500PX took Kelly Thompson who is from the micro world.  And he is imposing tones of the MS model on 500PX, in effect turning them into a micro-type agency.  The day he convinced them to slash royalties by 40% is the day I closed my account. Like other agencies over time, I expect more and more "news" to come out of 500PX that we'll surely be discussing here on MSG.
