1. Don't panic
2. Do not use that hard drive anymore!
3. Turn off the computer that contains the hard drive
4. Disconnect the hard drive and connect it to another computer that runs file recovery software such as R-Studio.

There are many programs out there. Some work on some files some do better with restoring other files.

The most important part is that you do NOT use that hard drive at all anymore until it is plugged into another computer as a secondary drive!!!

As long as you are running that hard drive, data is being written onto it, non-stop. There is a high chance that precious data will be lost the longer you run the hard drive.

Therefore, it is recommended to turn off the computer and remove that hard drive so you can insert it into another computer as a secondary hard drive. Then the operating system will not use the drive to buffer and use it for temporary files.

do what click_click said... I personally have the whole portfolio on the current hard drive, on the backup hard drive and on 32GB memory stick's. so... in 3 places. I really hope you manage to recover your files; and this must be a lesson for the future.

took sometimes and able to recover all the files.. it seems is okay to use the C: drive of this computer while I accidentally format the partition D: which share the same harddisk..

there are quite a few good software..some are very good like even able to preserve the directory and folder.

But like you guys said..always backup, it can be a hard disk hardware crash..hard disk get stolen, laptop get stolen..

But if there is a way to prevent accidentally format a Drive? like lock a drive?

when i plug in my portable drive..USB..sometimes it becomes F: G:..and all Alphabets are confusing and make me format the wrong drive at that moments.

Yes, but your D: is always you D: so it's hard to understand how you got confused and formatted that one? Good news is, you got everything back. Nice.

Assign Drive Letters is what you want to do for your external drives. Say for example you have a portable and you do that. It will always be M: (suggestion is start into the alphabet so it avoids conflicts.) I always had one on the Windows 98 computer that was K: for my business. I made N: the CF reader for the camera cards.

Here's the way to do it in Windows 7 (even though my best system is XP, it's basically the same information and process)

Hope that helps?

a friend of mine did this 10 years ago.......  despite the extra warning "do you really want to format this" type thing, so he was ridiculed for many years....... just giving you a heads up :D.  If you don't have friends, or haven't told them, then you'll be ok (after you've followed the other advice here about restoring your work)

but on the plus side, you can add to what I call "my awesome manual in how to NOT screw up in life"

my manual gets bigger all the time :D

i think sometimes i got too many USB port..

anyway, it is a mistake..like I was kind of loose in mind and not concentrated..

well, i guess it is just a reminder of backup again.. if a failed hard disk or stolen laptop..it won't be a real loss.
