Title: Agency royalty rate comparison
Post by: velocicarpo on August 17, 2011, 14:20
Hi all,

As a result of this discussion: http://www.microstockgroup.com/fotolia-com/new-commissions-at-fotolia/msg214788/?topicseen#new (http://www.microstockgroup.com/fotolia-com/new-commissions-at-fotolia/msg214788/?topicseen#new) I start here a new thread in order to collect data about the royalty rates the known agencies pay us.

This helps us to draw attention to the matter, make people more aware about what they get, earn and lose and expose companies with unfair or abusive commissions. Once the data is collected and well prepared we may publish the data via a seperated site/blog/instance of MSG. I want to keep the Data simple in order to make it easier to compare. Please include a link to the specific agencies sites of a more complex commission scheme is in use.

I guess I need your help to do this since I suck at numbers...I make a start here:

ISTOCK:

Non-exclusive:
15% - 20%

Exclusive:
25% - 45%

Depending on the so called "Redeemed Credits"
http://www.istockphoto.com/help/sell-stock/rate-schedule (http://www.istockphoto.com/help/sell-stock/rate-schedule)

SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
Subscription:
0.25 $ - 0.38 $ per download

Estimation:
With a 1 month subscription and maximum download (25 images/day) shutterrstock gets 0.33 $ per Download   (maximum images 25 x 30 = 750. Price of Subscription 1 month (US) = 249 $. 249/750=0.332 $

SHUTTERSTOCK:
UK monthly subscription £149 (more or less the same as in US$)
European monthly subscription €199 (slightly more than in US$, but not a huge difference - probably just a result of currency rate fluctuation)

It's gonna be long, but it's a great idea to collect these data.
I think we'll have to organise data in a table with many many columns before we can draw some conclusions:
subs, credits, ELs
USD, EUR, GBP
levels
...

Alamy:

60%

Zoonar:

Depending on the size of your Portfolio:
50% - 80%
When usage is cell phones or various print products the royalty is 50%

Dreamstime:

Depending on the Level of Image:
Non-exclusive: 25% - 50%
Material-exclusive: 27.5% - 55%
Photographer-Exclusive: 60% on all Levels

Could someone who is good at numbers calculate the subscription cuts for Dreamstime?

I'm sorry but this is useless with those numbers.

I brought up the issue before that although Canstock pays 50%+ commission, I'm getting a third of cash what I would get as a 15% non exclusive Photo+ file.

Just the percentages don't say anything. It's absolutely useless.

You have to take into consideration many more factors such as level of file (at DT), level of contributor (at FT), file sizes, commission %, credit pricing, credit discounts, exclusive file/non-exclusive file, subscription/credit return bla bla bla.

It's a great idea - I just wouldn't want to compile those numbers. Kudos to whoever feels up for it.

It would be a great piece of information but only if it's done accurately and it has to be updated.

I don't want to be rude but this is only useful if done correctly. It's not going to help anyone just posting the % commissions of each agency...

The basic numbers are fine for the beginning. It is better to do SOMEthing that doing NOTHing because you cant do it perfectly. Once collected we can compile a nice sheet and, if wanted, later include things like discounts.

When the data is complete in one place it is alot easier to compile a sheet.

There might be some useful numbers in this thread for you.  I'm afraid I ran out of steam with it when other demands took over.

the most important info is missing.... the amount of buyers each agency has. it would be awesome if we can see it in percentages like istock roughly 30% of all buyers... SS 30%... so forth

Good idea. Lets start basic and then expand...the various site analytics tools should offer some basic data, even if it is not 100% reliable.
When we have all the basic roayalty rates I`ll put a PDF or sheet online and then we add one thing after another. Maybe some number freak out there is more suitable for that than me ;-)

Alamy:
60%
Or, to be precise, 60% if sold directly through Alamy, 40% if sold through a distributor.
