Only for SS and BS.

Ok, thank you for your answer.

I'm doing the same now, but I'm new in this world and thought maybe I was wrong  ;)

I have found that others don't request that. Only SS and BS. But if it's a specific event such a marathon or riot or something like that it would be helpful to see the date. But "editorial" in the sense of not having a model/property release I don't think it's too important.

Hi:

Do you always write the date on title or description when submit editorial pictures?

Yes, the Date and Location goes back to the days before computers, it's called the Dateline. That information is important for anyone using an Editorial image because it tells the accurate location and the date. That's why IS is so particular and the date must match the EXIF date or they will reject the Editorial image. Good practice would be, always include that in the description field, even if some places don't require it.

Buyers find that data important, if it's not there, you might be missing sales.

If I take a picture of just a brand, for example, Coca-Cola, without any newsworthy information do you think it's important to know the date and location? I don't think so. It's different from an actual newsworthy event. But that's just my opinion. But I also think it doesn't hurt anyone to copy the date and location from the SS description field tho. On the other hand, yes, the date needs to match the exif info and also the date field in some agencies such istock or pond5

Oh, Illustrative editorial not News Editorial. That wasn't in the original question or the replies. Yes for news, it's very important, for pictures of products that are trademarked or copyrighted portions of the packaging, not so important. It just said Editorial Pictures.

Yes. That's why I was making the difference between actual editorial newsworthy event pictures  vs. just pictures without a proper model/property release that pass as editorials. We need to start making that difference

I understand what you mean. I thought that the date wasn't important in my pictures, because most of them are touristic places or things like that, buildings or cityscapes, not news or concrete events.

I use to write just the month and year in SS and BS. Maybe a short abbreviation could be a good option for the other agencies at the end of the title.

Shutterstock and iStock require date and place, others don't care so why complicating your life? Just put the *ing date and place in IPTC and upload the same caption to all sites. Microstock is not about making sense, it is about minimising time spent and maximising returns.

Yes dates are important even if they're not news related. Buildings can be renovated or destroyed etc. and in a few years time, someone might be looking for a picture of the ''before'' to write an article about it.

I use the same editorial description for all the agencies which is accepted without any issues: ''city, country - month day, year: description"

Microstock is not about making sense, it is about minimising time spent and maximising returns.

That's a good point. Have to change the mind to this, minimize the wasting of time.

Well, with copy and paste maybe it is not a great waste of time I guess. Gonna try a short date format (mm/dd/yy or dd/mmm/yy).

I don't like how the title shows, I mean, I like the description before the place and date for search engines and quick review for the buyer. That's the main reason why I didn't use the date in other agencies but SS and BS.

But, I use to see the date in all the editorial pictures, that's the reason for my question. When you spend hours and hours with this your mind is always searching for mistakes in all what you do. That's my problem really. Have to focus and improve the using of my time.

Thank you for all your answers.

I also upload all editorial or all commercial batches. If you mix a submission of some photos between one and another you are going to spend more time selecting which one is editorial or not and editing titles, etc

Yes, I've already learnt this. 10 pictures batches, all creative or all editorial.

Oh yeah, another good idea, plus some sites, Editorial, commercial, illustrations, video, whatever else, all go to different review teams. Might as well make my batches all one type just for my tracking, instead of mixed.

Indeed. And also with without releases... I upload batches of ten with similar topics: nature, architecture, objects, etc.

Too bad you left so soon, yes, and the claim that others don't care is wrong, many others and buyers do care. Even with illustrative, where the location probably doesn't matter, the date can be useful in the future.

What about the next new site, then edit and add again? Just like any other part of the metadata, add it to the image, do it right the first time, the work is done. As in "minimizing time spent and maximizing returns." 👍
