Title: An Interesting MS Industry Report
Post by: ACS on September 18, 2013, 16:26
While I was searching for a free Microstock Industry Report I came across this. It is a kind of compact examination of the industry from Agencies' perspective over Fotolia. It might be interesting for those never seen before. Sorry if it has already been shared and discussed before.

(I found it through a google search, so I assume it is not confidential)

I haven't had a chance to read through it all but I did save it for later in case it gets removed.  It looks like an interesting read.

Interesting that the PDF is titled "Case CONFIDENTIAL" ... not sure if it was meant to be public or not.  It seems like large companies, agencies, institutions often have problems with keeping confidential info private.  Who knows if that is the case here or not.

Frankly speaking, if this is not a fiction; it may be confidential. But when "microstock+sector+report" searched at Google it comes as the third result.

I read (skimmed bits) this and I'm not all that impressed.

Lots of errors in details and at the end he didn't solve the puzzle - just said it was great to have a war chest of cash to invest once they did decide how they would solve the puzzle.

Personally I think its about marketing and state of the art search ability - customers know about them and can find what they want.

It is a case study thrown together by MBA students as part of a competition - whether they offered a separate paper with a set of "solutions" or just didn't have any answers to the questions they posed for themselves anybody's guess.

Here's a description of the competition: The competition is known for its unique 24 Hour format, which pushes top MBA students to develop solutions for a real business while under time constraints
Description
The fourth annual Haskayne 24 Hour Case Competition will be hosted by the Haskayne School of Business, from March 6-9, 2013. The event will challenge a total of 16 teams from Haskayne and other attending MBA programs to put their creative and analytical skills to the test while offering opportunities to make connections with local business, judges, and sponsors. No other university in Western Canada holds a case competition of this intense 24 hour format or competitive elimination style.

Ironically in some industries there are many jokes about the MBAs making a total mess.

I thought some of the history was interesting! Getty pays $50 million for iStock in 2006 and $92 million for Jupiter in 2008 (Jupiter had spent $400 million in the previous 4 years acquiring many others.....bit of capital destruction going on there) and then, at the top of the market boom, sells itself to an investment house for $2.4 billion. Now that's what I call a good sales and marketing organisation..........certainly good at selling itself! Wonder what their annual rate of return is on $2.4 billion?

This is a year 2010 report. Materials used since 2004 and capturing limited view on industry. So, it is not of current times. It is showing you past trends and capturing it for present times would not be of so much value because lot has changed in last three years. There are jazzy formulas and other academic theories and hypothesis in this PDF.

photographer's market 2013 seems to be good read for anyone.
