I was just wondering is there's a market in stock photography for architectural and real estate photos. I have the potential to work with a start up but the client wants the copyrights of all the images I shoot for him transferred to his company. For the most part I really don't care too much about copyrights of the real estate images but I don't want to cut myself off from future earnings if there's a market for them.

I think there could be a market for them if they are property released - although that could get extensive if you need releases for all the art and furniture etc. in them.

Absolutely no market whatsoever for stock images of architecture, real estate or interiors. I've tried it. It doesn't work. Forget it and save your time for productive work __ that's my advice.

i have sold a few architect interior and exterior on iStock but really not much demand as far as i can tell.

When you're at the property don't forget to look for finer details that local service providers will need for their websites and marketing. For example, heating & cooling companies will need images of central air units, furnaces, duct work and so on. In a nice home you might find tons of background textures on walls, countertops, floors, etc. Look for flaws in the home .. stains in the carpet ( a carpet cleaning company will need these ) .. signs of water damage in the ceiling ( a roofing company needs these ).

As for your client wanting ownership of images, that's normal but it should be for the images you are hired to shoot for them .. not simply every frame you fire off while standing on the property. They should give you a shot list of what they want .. you give them what they paid for and the rest is stock. Common sense .. if they want interior shots of entire rooms then you shouldn't shoot a wide angle of the bathroom and put it on stock. Also if you charge based on time, don't waste their time shooting your stock. Make sure you are still giving the client what they pay for.

P.S. I think Randy makes some very good points when you have a location you should get the most out of it. Shoot lifestyle, shoot location, shoot still life on location, shoot elements from the location. Shoot everything you can from any one location, maximize your potential sales.

My experience is that there is a market for images of a home, home office, home's garden in various seasons, home remodeling, repair, fix-up etc. The home in question is my home so I don't have to schedule time and I try to use any repairs or remodeling as it's proven to be a saleable subject.

I don't know if that really counts as architectural or real estate though.
