I just found out about and downloaded this software called Backup Beast today for myself and it seems perfect for photographer and videographers. They are offering 500GB of lifetime file backups for one payment of $10. The program automatically backs up whatever folders you want on your computer to the cloud. I've looked into doing back up on dropbox like this but they charge $499 a year!
I duplicate everything on multiple hard drives but I've always been concerned because I didn't have an offsite location to store any of the drives. I actually got the upgrade and got the unlimited storage option for around $70. This is not an annual fee just a one time payment. I think they're launching to the public in a day or two and the price goes up. Wouldn't this automatically delete files from the backup if you deleted a folder from your hard drive? I made the mistake some time back of thinking that if a folder was backed up, then the contents would be saved permanently.

500 GB isn't nearly enough for me now that I am shooting video, but for a 1-time fee of $70 that is very affordable. I too keep multiple back up drives but don't have anything offsite. I was thinking of simply getting a safe deposit box at the bank and just swapping out hard drives, but cloud is preferred. Paul brings up a good point, though. For me, I would rather have the flexibility of creating my own folders on the cloud and dragging my files into them, providing me with the flexibility of essentially having a cloud back up drive that I manage.

I can get 4TB external USB 3 drives for less that $100 and store them off site thus my backup. Call me traditional but I don't trust the cloud yet with my files and when that company goes under so does your so-called lifetime warranty...

One one attempt at using the cloud as backup went badly. I was copying from my archive which was on a RAID 1 and during the upload process (which was days) something failed and the originals were deleted from the RAID. To complicate it, one of the RAID drives died during the process, which might have been the problem. Fortunately, I had everything backed up on disks elsewhere. I just use multiple backup disks again. I love the cloud idea but if you have a sizeable archive the upload is brutal.
