No idea why this sells as much as it does. I think its pretty awful and useless in terms of stock.

I have some old, noisy and ugly point-and-shoot snapshots from 2004 at iStock. They are only in 1200*1600 resolution, but they sell, sell, sell...  ::)

I'm from Cali but I live in Medellin. Medellin is a very unequal city. Colombia is a VERY unequal country so you can expect to see very poor neighbourhoods with zero security or luxury neighbourhoods with amazing restaurants/lifestyle with Europe-Japan-like security. Security in El Poblado, Envigado, Laureles, inside metro, malls, universities is very good, so you can take your camera out in those places/areas. But don't take your camera out if you are in the downtown (El Centro) because it's overcrowded and even if you see police or something it's not that safe (I wouldn't do it unless you see a policeman very close) - or you can talk to him and ask him to watch while you take photos. If you are going with a group of people, it's better than alone. I have a high-end cell phone that I never show up in "public" spaces... I actually have my backup which is a cheap phone that I can take out. I don't want you to get paranoid but the safety norms are like in every other big city, don't go alone at night, don't receive weird stuff from people you just know, identify authorities, learn some Spanish before (not everyone here is fluent in English). El Poblado is a very foreigner-friend neighborhood so you are going to find lots of hotels/hostels with English speakers people. Medellin is a beautiful city (not like Bogota) and Antioquia (the "state") too, but be safe when travelling to small towns (for example Ituango has now security problems).

Anyway, lots of foreigners tend to say that we are overly paranoid but maybe it's because of the 50 year-old war that is kinda ongoing. Nowadays less intense, but still there are some places where you can't go so easily. Overall Medellin is pretty safe, but read about the don't go places, and the must go places before. I recommend you Guatape, Jardin, Santafe de Antioquia, and some places inside Medellin such as Explora Park, Arvi Park, Metro/Metrocable, Botanical Garden. About food, taste "bandeja paisa", arepas and candies.

People is VERY friendly with foreigners so don't be afraid to ask for directions, places, food options, or to see if some "area" is safe for you as a foreigner.

Have a nice trip! I would love to see your photos from the travel :)

Have you done web reverse-image searches (IMO these are not as good at throwing up in-uses as they used to be, however) to see how they're being used?
Illustrating train travel, public transport. It's not always the prettiest photo that's the most useful.

I have done it with all my sells. I have found a lot of them to be honest and it's pretty cool to know how they use them. Regarding this picture I haven't found anything

When I'm out taking photos, I often remind myself that the people looking for content are doing so for ALL KINDS of reasons.  I am always curious about why people download my photos and how they want to use them.

I do know that we can rarely guess exactly what people are looking for or what they need.  Sometimes I upload a photo that I think "meh, you never know..." and that's what ends up selling.

Totally sucks, but it's one of my top sellers on SS, FT and iS.

Or this one: https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/corn-field-early-morning-light-443097361

Nothing special, but also one of my top sellers on SS and FT.

Nice colorful pills and the cornfield has a nice dreamy look with the corn and the haze? My pill shot isn't nearly as good, but it was one of my first "inspirations" when I started with Microstock.  :)

I need to do this with more photogenic pills.  ;) But I spent the rest of the props, so it's a no deal. Hmm, M&Ms, Skittles, some aspirin?

I'd agree. I think people need to think back to when they started. Ideas and what can I find that I have. This is an easy concept, we all have some around the house, and they are possibly a good seller. Kind of like sliced vegetables...

One of my best sellers is a bunch of cassava, which are kind of not usual in the US

Theres regularly articles all over the media about medication so its a great subject..what is often puzzling is how one image "takes off" while others that appear similar quality  sit unsold...thats where Search Algorithms come into play I guess...success breeding success.

This illustration is one of my ugliest top sellers, I always find it embarassing if someone buys this image. Conceptually unoriginal, very generic.

Not a top seller, but it sold recently, the simplest animation I've ever made:
