OKay, I may be relatively new to pond5... only there about a month... portfolio size of several thousand videos... how long should it take to start seeing sales? Right now, just looking at '0'...

Well, that of course depends on a large number of things.

"portfolio size of several thousand videos" means nothing without seeing what they are.

How good is the quality?
What is the content?
What is the pricing?
Is your SEO good?
Are there 200,000 clips competing for the same main keywords?
Do you have many similars (i.e. "thousands" is really hundreds or tens)?
How good are your sales elsewhere?

---

If you have a thousand drone clips of the same beach and some roads, a few cloud time lapses and random snapshots, then the answer might be "never".

If you have really good, unique stuff that shows up in the search without having 200,000 clips before you, then the answer might be "soon".

---

That being said, Pond5 has an enormous library and favors older content over new, so it's generally the hardest to get into as a newcomer, even if your clips are good.

However, if you are seeing sales every day at Shutterstock and Fotolia with that portfolio, it's likely it will start selling, but expect years before the snowball has really started rolling.

Getting any views? That's a decent indication.

Thanks. I don't yet have a portfolio at shutterstuck or fotolia, so I don't know.

Pricing, I thought $150 for 4k and $75 for HD was okay, but not sure if I should make it lower. (I know some people use the defaults of $25 & $50, so am competing with that).

SEO - I 'think' it's okay, but really don't know. (Did the keywording, descriptive titles, etc).

My content is unique. Similars - there are a few 'themes' but no - most of the content is not similar. If I had to guess - if you called 'similar' say taking a picture of a subject from the front, then from the side - as being 'similar' - then maybe 10-20%.

I've just recently finished uploading my portfolio elsewhere (apparently 'low earner' sites, haven't yet done the top 3) - and 'recent' meaning the last 1-2 months - so - it really depends on the site. I have gotten "some" sales - but in terms of "profit" - "maybe" between $20-$50/site. (But I've been working on this solid for 6 months - the keywording/cropping/videoing/etc - so $20-$50 seems very very low).

If you can find your own clips using 1-4 of the most important keywords, the buyers will find them and buy them when they need them.

If you can't find your own clips using 1-4 of the most relevant keywords for each clip, neither will the customers, unless they need something VERY specific and narrow down the search even more.

It's good that you have unique clips, but of course they need to be unique + needed to sell.  :)

---

Let's say you have a very nice clip of a specific beach in Sri Lanka called Unawatuna.

If a buyer just needs a clip of a beach they will likely never find your clip, because they will search for "beach", "paradise", "perfect", "tropical" or something like that.

Thousands and thousands of clips match that search and yours is not likely to be found since older clips have more sales.

Only if they want a clip of Unawatuna, and no other beach, they are likely to find YOUR clip. After a few years, maybe Unawatuna becomes a more popular destination, and your clip gets a few sales. It now also climbs the rankings for the more general terms and you MIGHT see even more sales.

It's a long journey.

Ah..... thanks for the FYI re: the seo... makes sense. I am thinking I can/could probably tweak my seo even a bit more then/make it better/etc.

It's been a bit of an "interesting" journey so far. Much more (initial) work than I expected, but hoping to see good results sales-wise. I enjoyed doing the photography/videos anyways, but obviously would like to see sales too :)

That's the important part, and it's also the only way to get better. To put in the hours.

It's so much easier to finish and sell clips now for me, than it was a couple of years ago. That's because I've made so many mistakes that I now have learned from. Everything from the optimal camera settings for each camera, to choosing angles, subjects and being out at the right time. I can't tell you how many times I've gone through older clips and wished I had exposed them to the right... A small thing like that just makes a world of difference.

It's so much easier to process and keyword a clip that is not only filmed well technically, but is very clear on what it is, especially if it's an abstract concept.

I think the most valuable lesson, however, is what clips not to waste any time on. That knowledge can of course only be acquired after a few years...  ;)

If any of my clips sell within 6 months of uploading to Pond5 I always find that a nice surprise, I usually expect it to take a year or so for clips to take traction.

Had 3 sales there today, one from 2012, 2015 and 2017.

I think `ve read this before, very interesting and often wonder why when other agents sell a lot quicker from the time of submitting.

I can understand it to some degree in that clients often work 4 months in advance, so if you submit a clip of summer, it is not very useful if they are working on Autumn themes right now.

I've been with P5 since beginning of 2017, most of the sales I've had so far have been from clips submitted in the first couple of months. Looking forward to the day when the almost 1000 clips I have there now start selling.

Somewhat frustrating when talking to people I know about my work and and what I have just uploaded and they ask if it has sold yet when it has only been only a month!

Yes, I just noticed that literally 'overnight'.

Chances are - it is just 'robots' scraping their website (i.e., 'new' search engines, etc), which is being counted as views. Probably not a real person.

Yes, gigantic spikes in views this week.
It happened twice in the past and in both cases it was due to P5 admins checking my portfolio before some huge disasters happened, in the form of membership programs

My views look the same...huge uptick this week. I remember this happened before, i want to say it was around last summer. After that I got a 120.oo extended license correction payment. So i can't be sure but i have always figured that when views went up like this its just pond5 doing internal reviews of the portfolio's looking for missed payments or mistakes. Not sure if that holds water but thats what made  sense to me.

Pond5 support said that google bot is causing this spike of views... they are looking into it.

Actually it is Pond5's advertising. Ads showing my clips are following me around to many different sites.

Sadly, I haven't seen any sales this month.

Don't get hopes up, those ads are personalized, if you visited your own profile at Pond5, they show you only your files. Others don't see the same ads.
