Does anyone know who is the current best selling stock photographer? arcurs.com says Yuri Arcurs is the the best selling stock photographer, is that true? His wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_Arcurs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_Arcurs)) says the same thing. However, no one can believe wiki these days.
-
That wiki page is outdated. Loads of stuff not added. Maybe I should update it ;)

Yes. But all the same, his claim is almost certainly true and likely to remain true for a long time to come. Perhaps 60D will be inspired by him!

Don't think Yuri qualifies - he is now an agency with staff photographers. Neither is he the top selling agency - hugely off the mark. The best probably keep a nice, low profile. That's why they are successful over a long period of time.

wonderful, just wonderful, but the mere mention of yuri is starting to cure my insomnia, not to mention of course the slight feeling of who gives a sh!t. now that he is with the ahem... "professionals" he will be diluted like a piss after a dozen beer. again i ask... yuri who???

Yuri's recent change of status, with his 'exclusivity' deal, almost certainly means that other microstock photographers will be selling more images per month than him. He's lost the vast majority of the high-volume subscription sales.
As an independent contributor my Istock sales only account for about 10% of the total volume of sales each month. Even if a more favourable best match positioning meant that Yuri's sales doubled at IS he could still have lost 80% of the volume he used to sell.
Step forward the new "world's top selling stock photographer" ... whoever you are.

Makes sense. I suppose whoever the number 2 independent is/was will pass him.

I'd venture a pretty safe bet that Yuri is not the most profitable microstock photographer. Not sure how he could be with the huge amount of overhead he has, while other folks run pretty lean businesses and still put up impressive numbers.

It's not me.

Hi All,
This is an interesting question...Is it based off of all time sales and revenue or is it based on annual sales right now? I can safely say that the ones that put the most in their pockets are not producing for agencies anymore they run stock agencies or have retired. Not speaking of myself here but of others I know of in the industry that have been here for 30 years +. Their revenue over those 30 years is so way off the charts it would be very hard to catch up with the market we have now.
Cheers,
Jonathan

Define "best selling"? Today, yesterday, last year, last decade? Sold the most images, made the most profit, produced the most photos? It's a fairly meaningless phrase as no-one really knows any other photographer's sales or profit margin or any other details that might mean you can work out if you're the "best selling".
Similarly, Yuri also claimed that a bunch of his photographers were in the top 10 in the world. As defined by who? See I checked and I'm actually the best photographer in the world. I asked everyone I know and they agreed.

It's not true until you get a coffee mug that says your the "world's greatest".

Jon Arnold is certainly among the top sellers of all times but these famous stockers never discuss in detail their earnings and tend to keep a rather low profile.

I'm not the world's greatest photographer but I am the World's Best Dad. I have a gold medal that tells me so. :)

I'm always surprised when I look at this list of top 100 shutterstock contributors. There are a lot of people that hide in the woodwork

WaveBreakMedia for example don't seem to advertise themselves too much but I wouldn't be surprised if they are taking in as much as Yuri. I also saw they have a pretty nice studio (http://www.wavebreakmedia.com/stock-photo-video-footage-i-95/Cape-Town-Press-Release.html?goback=.gde_3727790_member_260439222)

I'm not convinced that some of those big-portfolio folks really make much money. Some do, wavebreak does for sure. But some of the vector guys, you do a search on some of their most popular stuff and their images come up on page 4 or 5 at best. They're definitely working on quantity over quality, and maybe it works, but I doubt their numbers are as impressive as they might seem.
More than the folks with the huge portfolios, I'm most impressed by the people with smaller collections that still are raking in the cash. I had a referral who earned me almost $10,000 over a few years. And really he didn't start producing much until a year in, so the bulk of that money came over a 2-year period. If I earned $10k, you can imagine how much he earned for himself. And no one knows him. If I told you his name, you would never have heard of him. He doesn't participate in the forums (just a couple of times at SS as far as I can tell) and he flies under the community radar.
I have to wonder how many more people there are out there like him, keeping quiet and putting up numbers that would make all of us look bad.
