I know it might not seem like much (since I've mainly focused on videos).

But, recently decided to upload some of my images as well.

Currently I have a HUGE image portfolio of a grand whopping total of about 50 images :) Which, probably only took me about 20 hours to curate, edit, keyword, etc... so (at the moment) my 'effective' salary for images is about $0.02/hour...

BUT... it's still pretty cool the idea of having made a sale from an image I took! (I suppose I am thinking the 'super' amazing thing is that... with the "2 million images uploaded" this week thing from shutterstock, mine happened to be one of the ones that was purchased (via subscription). And I didn't have to upload 50,000 variations of the same thing to get that...!

Now I just need to figure out how to multiply that number by about 1,000,000 per month... and I'll be set! :)

How much did you expect to make prior to uploading those images?

Actually, I had no idea. For me, it was more a test. With all the 'doom & gloom' posts here, and the fact there are lots of 'spam' portfolios on shutterstock - AND - the fact there is just a lot of competition period, I wasn't sure if I was going to make anything, or how long it would take...

So - I just wanted to try a small test batch, to see if I got anything...

I've only had that batch uploaded to shutterstock for maybe a week - and it was nice to see a sale, even though it was rather small. But it was just 'cool' that I did get a sale...

Now, of course - if I can upload say 10000 images, etc - and see similar if not better results, then to me, that is encouraging... but of course - there is the time aspect of things (figuring out how to do it intelligently to maximize revenue, etc)...

But for me - it's still just pretty cool that I got a sale for an image I took... :)

Congrats! I started with a portfolio of about 100 photos - one and half year ago. Today, I have about 1500 with some agencies and around100 4k videos ... I do not regret at all, I have a beautiful progresssion which is confirmed with the number of sale and $.

seems like yesterday (actually over seven years ago) that I made my first sale and it was also for $.25. I ran around the house screaming for joy.  Funny is was more fun back than making less money that today making more money  8)

Wow, this is a cheerful, supportive group. I'd forgotten why I don't come here very often. Maybe people should get together and create a forum just for microstock. Oh...wait....

OP, congrats. I remember that day about 12.5 years ago for me. Keep it up and don't worry about the people who apparently have plenty of free time on their hands and nothing better to do than tear people down.

Now, excuse me, I need to get back to creating images.

Getting sales is nice. I am glad I started back when a significant number of a batch would get uploaded in the first day or 2 after they went live on SS. I doubt the level of sales today would motivate me to stick with it if I was starting now.

It may seem like a negative response, and getting a first sale is a big deal. However 0.25 cents is of no use to anyone. If newbies and photo enthusiasts jump on board and can find the motivation to shoot for this sort of return then SS and Alamy will both end up over supplied with 200 million images. And yes we're already there, so newbie photographers are either very optimistic and well funded, or they simply live in a cloud of delusion. A photo sale of over 50 USD may be worth getting excited about.

Alamy? Why lump Alamy with SS? Prices at Alamy are generally much higher (but far fewer sales).
Maybe you meant to say Adobe?
I totally agree with your sentiment, and wouldn't get out of bed to supply SS or Adobe, but I'm still supplying Alamy.
