Title: Create keywords in native language or English. Any thoughts on that??
Post by: PelleBo on February 05, 2017, 04:26
Hi and nice to be in the Forum.
Anyone who has tried to create keywords in native language when submitting images? I have not tried since I doubt that there will be an accurate translation.....just look at the results from Google translate in general, thy are quite bad. I´m from Sweden and there are options on several micro stock agencies to use Swedish as keyword language.

Anyone using a language other than English?
What do you think? Does it generate accurate and equivalent keywords in English? Must be important if you want to reach out to customers who are English speaking.......

Depends on the agency. Some agencies translate to several languages. If they allow you to keyword in Swedish, you could do that, and as your English is excellent, you could check how well they have translated into English.
If an agency doesn't support Swedish, you could add Swedish keywords yourself, particuarly for words with particularly Swedish relevance, like food or editorial subjects.
One thing to be careful of is accents. Several agencies seem not to cope with accented characters; they may just miss out the accents, or the accents might generate some sort of error, so you might like to check how one word containing accented letters fares, before adding any others.

Why I hesitate is because I have seen so many strange keywords translated into Swedish when I'm on Shutterstock´s Swedish website and all keywords in contributors images are translated into Swedish. That's why I always use the English site when just browse around and look at pictures.

English if the site is naturally in English. They do the translations if wrong, it's their site.

I thought that a serious agency like Shutterstock and Fotolia would have good resources and software to make accurate translations. Especially if they have the option of translation from different languages. What I'm thinking about is how it affects sales and search results if you use keywords in native language or English???? I guess it is safest to use English keywords if you are fairly comfortable with English.
