Title: DACS and Alamy
Post by: Justanotherphotographer on July 15, 2015, 10:30
Does anyone know if Alamy will tell us which licenses we can claim for so we can add them to our direst claim? I got the email saying I had 40+ licenses that qualify but not what they are. Do I have to stamp up 50% just to find out?

You look at your sales records. Alamy count UK books and magazines and Worldwide books and magazines, not newspapers or ebooks. However, there is dispute about whether Worldwide sales actually count.
If you pay the 50%, they won't tell you what the sales were, they'll just claim for them.
I've never claimed before, but I'm going to have a go myself, as I realised that iS sales in UK mags and books would also count, so I've found some in-uses.
If I can't do it myself, I'll let Alamy do it for me. 50% is better than the 0 I'm getting at the moment. The downside is that the iS sales wouldn't be counted in.

Do a search for current and previous DACS threads on the Alamy forums. There's lots of info there.

Thanks for letting me know. Looking at the DACS form it seems you only need to supply 3 books and isbns for the year, which I can get by just doing a search in Google books for my name. I know from my sales volume I easily top the total number of uses you can claim for so I think I can do it myself.

Last year I think I just printed out a copy of my Alamy sales report and sent that to DACS and they did the rest - I didn't need to find specific instances.  They were really helpful about answering questions by e-mail if I recall correctly and I eventually did get some money back so no complaints.  If you are in the US it is very expensive to get the forms proving you are a US taxpayer so DACS kept 30% for Britain but that is better than the 50% Alamy will keep if you go through them.  Good luck!

@sgoodwin: so did you only claim for Alamy sales? Did you not claim for any sales via micros?

I only claimed Alamy sales - too much trouble to sort out any others, although I suppose if you have a lot and can find them easily it would be worth it.

Easy enough to find some credits, just searched my name on Alamy and Google Books. I share a name with a US investigative journalist, but her works are pretty distinctive.

If it is anything in books, magazines or TV then you should be able to claim credit - no sense leaving money on the table!

How much will one get for each sale?

No idea - I think it depends on the usage.  For me the return was decent for the number of images.  Some people have reported getting large amounts back so definitely worth applying if you have some sales that qualify.  They say the average payback was 250 pounds so not pocket change.  Their web site is here  (http://www.dacs.org.uk/for-artists/payback (http://www.dacs.org.uk/for-artists/payback)).

There isn't a set payout. There's a pot available which is shared pro rata among the eligible applicants.

Alamy told me I had several licenses but wouldn't tell me which ones and my UK and worldwide RM books and magazines added up to less than they said but I sent my info to DACS last year since they only take 30% - I had planned to get an exemption from paying VAT but eventually (after filling out all the confusing forms) found out it cost $85 and not knowing how much I'd get back I told them to pay the VAT instead. Once I know I will get enough to make the time and trouble and cost (which you need to do yearly) of getting the waiver worthwhile, I'll do it.

I've been eligible for DACS for a few years but last year was the first time I realized it in time to file. It's a really great thing. There's a similar scheme in the Netherlands. Wish the US had a similar scheme to help us out like this! I've had several photos in UK newspaper Sunday magazines, but unfortunately those don't count - have a lot more for this year's application, so should be worthwhile. The Alamy forum has lots of help. I've already forgotten most of what I did last year but I'd say DIY makes sense. The folks at DACS are very helpful.

Alamy said I can make 20+ claims.

Does this figure only apply to sales in certain years? I have never claimed it before. Can retroactive claims be made?

You can't make retroactived claims as such, but eligible publications always count, so books/mags eligible this year are eligible next year and so on.

I created tutorial how to find your work in UK to be able claim payback from DACS http://microstocktools.com/artists-payback-from-dacs/ (http://microstocktools.com/artists-payback-from-dacs/)

Thanks for posting that.  I searched and found a couple I was not aware of so have now filed my DACS claim.

Didn't the DACS payback window close at the end of September?

No, it is Oct. 14 so there is still time is you haven't done it yet.

Gannet77: First deadline was really end of September, but then they moved it to 14 October, so still chance to claim payback for year 2014

This was my second year claiming. I originally just submitted new stuff from 2014 - ITPC info for iStock and SS images that qualified and my Alamy spreadsheet for the rest, then found out I needed to resubmit proof of the older image licenses too - I moved up to a new level for magazine licenses - but the people from DACS were really helpful and explained it all to me so I was able to get them everything they needed, and they have already confirmed that I'm all set.

I thought we just needed a few examples, are they after a list with as many as possible? There's just room on the form for three in each category. How do we get that list from Alamy? I thought they only let you know the specifics if they made the claim for you.

It's very easy to go through your Alamy sales and pick out the appropriate sales. Of course, that only applies for RM. (I doubt if Alamy would know what RF sales are used for)

But I have now been through the DACS website again (after sending, abnd after I read people sayibg they were sending the Alamy spreadsheet three times to see what spreadsheet I should send them. I even did a firefox 'find' on spreadsheet, with no result. I could only find the spaces for three specific books (also mags and TV), but no way of sending the full list I've got that I could find. I did think that the band for the number of pics you're claiming for was very broad!
(I wanted to do it myself so that I could claim for iS sales I'd found in-use.)

Where do I append the full list?
Tx

When I made up my spreadsheet to send them, I used the UK book and magazine sales from my Alamy printout and then added more rows and columns to the bottom of that and added in the qualifying uses that I found from iStock and SS (via google image, google books, Amazon UK, and tineye searches). On the DACs form itself on their website, you can put in specific ISBN numbers for three books/magazines if you have them, but if you are relying on the Alamy spreadsheet, you just put in "Alamy 2014" where it asks for ITPC and send along the spreadsheet.
Occasionally you'll have an RF license on Alamy where your spreadsheet will say unlimited magazine use or something to that effect, but in most cases for RF sales all the info they give you is the size of the image licensed, so even if it's a UK use, it's no good for DACS, unless you can do a search and find it. Good luck!

You email your spreadsheet directly to DACS. [email protected]

If you have enough ISBN numbers to fill in three books and three magazines, then I believe you don't need to send along a spreadsheet at all, but if you are relying on your Alamy spreadsheet for any of the three, then you need to send a list of all the uses, including those from past years.

I still haven't found where you're meant to send a list of all the uses you're claiming for, I just see the three. I don't have mine on a spreadsheet, I have them on a Word doc, but I could make a spreadsheet if that's needed.
I accept that I must be blind or illiterate, but where do you append the details? I still only see space for three example 'proofs'.

Alamy doesn't list ISBN numbers, are you saying all I need is the sales report from Alamy and DACS will take it from there?

Same for Microstock agency, where I found a list of ISBN numbers, pages and my name. Send that to DACS and they will do the rest? Many more than three.

Reply from DACS "If the Getty or Shutterstock sales report states the type of use (book/magazine), year of sale and country you can use this to claim for Payback." I don't think they do? How do I make a report?

SS:
You email your spreadsheet directly to DACS at [email protected] There is nowhere to attach it to the online application
If you have 3 ISBN numbers for each type of use, I don't think they need the spreadsheet.

YY:
You download the report from Alamy and send them the ones that show magazine or book sales in the UK. You need a minimum of 3 UK licenses to make a claim.

What about SS, IS, FT, DP, DT, and the rest? I have book covers, inside pages and magazines. Found some ISBN on Amazon search. What about the other thousands? Microstock doesn't give us a spreadsheet like Alamy.

So long as  you have got the ISBN & details for the books you have found, you can send them as well. After reading this, I sent the Alamy details and the details of iS in-uses I have found. Of course, not everyone credits as they should, so no doubt I've missed plenty - another downside of RF.
