Title: Discovery Channel - MS
Post by: Mantis on January 11, 2013, 21:10
I was contacted by the Discovery Channel to sell an image, rare, to them for one of their difficult shows. I entered into an agreement today. This was a fun experience but not one in which I haven't experienced previously.  With National Geographic the use of my work was more MS and that was frustrating. Yea, wow, but the work is still in use on their educational site.  But on Jan 27th, at 9pm Central, one of my wildlife images used in MS will be featured on the Discovery Channel special “Monster Squid: The Giant is Real”. This is the first time EVER that a giant 30-foot squid has been caught on tape. For centuries they have only been found washed up on shore.  Watch the show. I don't know where my image will appear, but I will have film credits.

Very exciting to be part of that.  I'll do my best to remember to tune in.  Be sure to remind us when the day comes!  And it's nice to see a postive and uplifting post about stock these days too.  :)

I am digging through old back ups trying to find the image to post here.  It's a giant eyeball shot I took years ago using a fisheye lens (no pun intended.)

Congrats Mantis, what a great feeling to see your image there!!

Thank you.  I had some news footage years ago where I was dressed in Santa clothing while underwater.  I handed out gifts to other scuba divers and it was filmed and found its way onto the news.  We used things like bottles of booze as gifts so the water wouldn't ruin the present.  As much fun as that was, being contacted by Discovery producers to negotiate the use of one of my images in their film was really fun and exciting.

Wow...that's pretty awesome!  For about a week now, I've been seeing commercials for the show on several news channels and stories on various national news sites.

Have you seen the photos of the Monster Squid yet?  Unreal beauty.  They say its eyes are the size of dinner plates...and the photos I've seen so far are incredible!  I was already planning to watch the show...now I definitely will!  Congrats!  :-)

Nice experience. Congrats.

What I don't understand: when that image is up on a microstock site (or didn't you mean to say that with "used in MS"?) why do they have to contact you? Wouldn't the use be covered by a standard license?

Thats awesome! too bad its on discovery as that channel has gone to crap lately... I hope they have something decent instead of making a 1 hour special on something that should be 15 minutes max. dragging and dragging... after the commercial break, we show you what you saw before the commercial break.
