Title: Do you use social media to market your catalog?
Post by: LP Productions on January 18, 2016, 18:53
I'm curious if anyone uses social media for marketing their catalog? If so, what works?

What are other marketing strategies have you found useful?

Thanks,
Lathe

No. I personally don't know anyone who buys stock photography. I have the sense that it would be a waste of my efforts.

Nope. The market is business to business, so social media marketing is a bit pointless.

I've tried promoting my personal photo site on FB. Lots of people "like" it, but none of them are photo buyers so it's a mostly pointless exercise.

Maybe if your social media consists of photo or video buyers the results would be different. But who has that kind of network?

Okay...so then the question is...do you do any marketing outside of whatever a curator might do?

Social media is ineffective for a person up to a certain threshold of fame/relevance. Other marketing methods are becoming outdated as technology and society changes. Even blogging is becoming pointless. SEO, which I used to bank on, is mostly useless now for selling images -- only picture quality matters.

Point is  your skill is now your only marketing agent. Social media is a waste of time unless for fun.

It probably depends on what you are trying to market. For stock images only it might be a waste of time. I started pushing my facebook page a little more the past year and some good things have come out of it. I don't pay for advertising after realizing that most of the people you get that route don't participate on your page. My situation might be different because I live in a high tourist area, but the past year we've sold quite a few prints, calendars and had tons of offers for work, all through facebook. This week alone an Airline contacted me about images, also a charter company bought images. I share images and video from the local area so most of my page followers are interested in this area, including local business, gov't, villa owners. I get wedding, portrait photography and other random offers constantly which I don't do, so I recommend someone local. So, personally I feel it's worth it and it's kind of fun break from the mostly negative landscape of stock photos:) www.facebook.com/christianwheatleyphotography (http://www.facebook.com/christianwheatleyphotography)
