Does anyone ever wonder into a restaurant or business and ask to photograph food, staff, and/or customers? Telling the owner/manager that the photos are beneficial to their website and/or menus?

Yes, that's the deal as part of a TFP agreement. It's a great deal and I think it happens a lot.

Beneficial in what sense? Are you offering to trade them for the opportunity? Are you ready to gather model release forms from all these staff and/or customers? What are you planning to do with these? Do you have a contract for the agreement ready?

Hi Klapamos,

We often go into attractive locations and work out deals to come back and use their location with our models ( sometimes they want some with their own staff ) in trade for using the location. We do this all the time. But we set it up for another time when the business is slow or closed. We work a deal but it is a great way to get into locations that otherwise wouldn't let you in even if you paid them. They need some images for self promotion. Great win / win situation for everyone. If it's a restaurant we often shoot food at the end as well then we all eat like kings for free. Give it a try.

It's funny this thread came along today...I was just thinking about doing this earlier this morning, only I was thinking along the lines of a bakery or pastry shop. Shoot their goods TFCD and you don't even have to worry about preparing all of the stuff. They can assist you in setting it all up, and you shoot it. In exchange they're getting at least a $200-400 photography service for free.

Hey GM,

Lots of places are totally up for this idea. Schools, Libraries, Stores, Restaurants, Business centers they love the idea of some private self promo stuff in trade for letting you in on off hours. I will add one word of warning. Out of all the locations we have shot in the one we can't get is a a bakery. They are open all day for selling and then they bake all night for the next day. I want to set my lights and we can't find a company that can spare a minute for us to shoot in. If you could get it it might be a good seller just from the trouble it can be. But lots of other places, just start asking.

I am lucky to travel with my work and always have my camera.I ask at many places if it is ok to take a few photos.those photo's inside unusual engineering places are starting to bare fruit.
I want to go inside a police station and get a friend holding his head in his hands sitting on a bed in a cell .I think it will make an arresting stock photograph

Any shop/library/works/prison or any place the public are denied normal access is a good place to shoot stock.To many people are afraid to approach or even ask which is sad.

Lots of places are also not totally up for this. They don't want you using their locations and selling images in a way that could benefit their competitors. They also don't want to worry about granting access and dealing with security and staffing in their locations. So, try, but don't be surprised if it isn't an automatic sell.

avava, perharps it has more to do with hygiene. my friend is a baker and she said if ever she is found letting someone else comes in when she's baking (usually before the shop opens), she better start looking for another job.

e.g. last thing she wants is a customer complaining to her boss that there is a lenscap found inside her sourdough bread

Good point Hali,

I have never looked at it from that stance. We have no trouble getting into restaurants but the rules might be different for each business. If I ever get into a bakery for a shoot I'll send you a copy. I wll also check for all our lens caps before leaving.
