RF   Royalty Free is a license type for copyrighted material like images, music, video or art. The word Free is misleading. An RF license grants the non-exclusive right to use an image for a one time flat fee in an unlimited number of projects without recurring fees. The Royalty Free license also allows altering an image and creating unique works for one's own goals.
It does not allow creating derivative works for resale (for instance web templates), nor redistributing or making the images available either for free or for a fee.
Copyright remains entirely with the original owner at all times. In general, RF images are less expensive to license than RM images (see RM) but never offer exclusivity.

RM   Rights Managed is a license type for copyrighted material like images, music, video or art, for a specific price, period and use. This license is exclusive (negotiable), which means that nobody else can use the image during the licensing period but the copyright remains entirely with the original owner at all times.
In general, RM images are more expensive to license than RF images (see RF).

You can find more acronyms useful in stock in my Compendium.
