Title: Editoral Stock
Post by: Pauws99 on October 12, 2010, 06:47
I see some sites accept editoral stock - what are the sales prospects for this in general?

Thanks

Some images sell, some don't.

In microstock the sites have generally no idea what an "editorial" image is, that's why they like images from current events and/or celebrities while they seem to reject most of (for example) unreleased travel shots, products with trademarked designs/logos etc. even if they would fit "editorial" category perfect.

I have some editorial images that sell well at SS, but I don't think they would accept them anymore if I uploaded them today.

I upload most of my editorial stuff to Alamy, especially the most niche images that would be downloaded at best a couple of times on a microstock site.

DT and SS deal with Editorial but the rates are pathetically low. Get with Getty, Alamy or some other agency that deals in particular with news related items.

regarding selling editorial stock, do u think it should have some details like date, where, who, what is in the picture? something like what shutterstock asks for.

I upload to alamy, but it seems there is no guideline of what to do with editorial captions, and it seems no where to search editorial image only.

Since Editorial should, in theory, be something news related or educational, then it does make sense to have details like, who, where, when, why. To be honest, if you really interested in editorial / photojournalism I'd stay . away from MS and take the long hard slog into agencies like Getty, EPA, AP and NatGeo.

Actually, I am surprised at how much editorial I sell through Shutterstock... Maybe it's because I mostly shoot newsworthy current events though (I freelance for my local paper)...  I have a picture of a soldier hugging his 3-year old son after coming back from overseas deployment that has won several awards and sells at least 3 to 5 times a week.

It's funny because I submitted a shot I took of a local coal power plant to SS while congress was debating the energy bill and SS rejected it as not newsworthy.  It did get accepted at Dreamstime and sold a couple of times when the debate was still happening.

SS has very specific (and stringent) guidelines for editorial captions/descriptions.  They also accept (soft news), historical, travel, minor sports events and minor celebrities as editorial.
"Not newsworthy" may be a little more relevant at DT.  But I have had the following image selected and sold at both sites.  In my opinion, they give me an outlet for (for fun) images that would otherwise waste space on my hard drive.  I haven't tried Alamy.  Do you think this type of image would sell there?
