Hi All,

I got a question about editorial stock.  I typically only submit regular stock where the logos and stuff have been cloned out and I have gotten model and property releases, but what about images where you don't have such releases?

For example, I have some shots of a street scene that I submitted to Canstock as Editorial stock but they were rejected for logos, not for the people that were in them in which I didn't have a model release.

I was under the assumption that logos were acceptable if the stock is considered editorial, so what am I doing wrong here, or does Canstock not take editorial images?

I know nothing of Canstock (perhaps you could put CanStock into the title or move this to the Canstock board?)
However normally with editorial, logos are fine unless they take up most of the photos, e.g. a close up an a logo alone often isn't acceptable.
I went on to CanStock's 'sell images / clips' page, but they don't seem to offer you their requirements unless/until you sign up. You presumably have access to that info (?)

Thanks for your reply.

I will have to find out what the procedure is.  I know like with Dreamstime, you go into your account and select a tab for editorial and then submit the file.  I don't see that option when I go into Canstock, so I have been putting a notation in the description... which I am hoping the reviewer will see, but it appears that they are not paying any attention to it.

Canstock, at this time, do not take editorial images. There are a number of us that really wish they would and we post in the forum there saying that from time to time. It's not something they have ruled out forever I think, but not at the moment.
Along with Fotolia they are now among the minority of (bigger) sites not to take editorial. Keep hoping! Regards, David.

Hey guys,

Well, I am beginning to think that every agency has different definitions/interpretations of what is editorial stock.

It appears that some stock agencies have a narrow interpretation -- where items are accepted as editorial if there is no model or property release.

Others have a wider interpretation of editoral stock.  They will take images without releases, but they will ALSO accept images where there are product logos.

For example, I have some images of vintage cars... some sites will take them and others agencies will not -- rejecting them due to logos.

Each agency has their own rules for different thing, and different inspection standards. Just read of acceptences on some agencies but not others.

From what I've read, SS requires editorial images to have some sort of 'news' angle.
iS doesn't allow images where the main focus is the logo, and they seem to be widening out of what they consider the 'main focus'. There also seem to be a few things they won't take, but that seems to depend on what inspector you get.

I guess you just have to get used to all the different quirks.
Good luck!

I think i've had SS refuse some of my stuff because it was posed. I've also had many refused at iS because I can't seem to upload images with the correct captioning, it's so frustrating but I seem to fail every time.  I've also had stuff rejected as editorial for "needing a property release". Sometimes it's just too hard for the 25c return.

Does editorial sell well?

my eidtorials sell well on 123, dreamstime & SS -- better than the editorial % of my total portfolio

unfortunately SS changed their policies so most of mine that sell there could not be accepted now.

most agencies dont really understand the basic concept of editorial, so most have the different policies you discovered

eg, yay recently started rejecting editorial submissions for lack of model or property releases!  then they issued several explanations which just increased the confusion.  they also seem to have reviewer nows who find one rejection reason and apply it to an entire batch - eg rejecting as 'similar' when the images are unlike ANY other images.  repeated emails to their support over the last month have been ignored
