Title: EIN Number Question
Post by: Whiz on October 14, 2010, 12:11
Have any of you who reside in the US ever thought about obtaining an EIN number? I have read that it is slightly safer to use an EIN instead of your SSN on W9 Forms. I am a bit paranoid when it comes to my SSN.

Too late to worry. In today's info world your ssn is already anything but anonymous.

I have an EIN but only because I own a full time photography studio. If I was simply doing micro I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I'd imagine the odds of your identity getting stolen through interaction with a (non-suck) agency is microscopic compared to all your other daily encounters in life.

Generally you only need an EiN if you have employees, have a keogh plan or are a corporation. As far as I know, you can obtain an EIN even if you don't need it. As Randy said, I doubt that it would ever be an issue at any reputable agency ( and that, of course , is all of them :) )
The only other point I would make is that in my opinion, when it comes to the IRS, the best strategy is to blend into the woodwork and not draw attention to yourself, which an EIN might do if you don't require it. Just my paranoid side coming out.

I have one, got it so I could sort out my tax stuff for the micros; mainly because I could get it over the phone without all the hassle of visiting embassies and sending off forms.
