Title: EXIF vs IPTC tags
Post by: fintastique on April 04, 2006, 08:19
I am currently submitting to eight different sites and I am trying to streamline the process.

I have noticed that some sites will extract data regarding subject and keywords from EXIF and IPTC tags on a JPG file.

Stockphotomedia
Gimmestock
DT

Have no trouble extracting that data from the EXIF tag

Fotolia and Can Stock seem to be able to cope with IPTC

BUT 123 and Big Shot claim to extract data from IPTC but in my experience they don't, even though Fotolia and Can Stock coped fine with the same files.

What programs do people use to edit IPTC tags?

Any ideas??

I use Pixvue and it works on all sites with some inconsistances.   This is a free download and is an add in to windows explorer.

Sometimes it just doesn't work at all (on any site).
On iPhoto i think the desciption never loads.
On featurepics, the name loads up but is beside the feild rather than in it.
I ams sure there is one other but I cant remember.

The EXIF tags that the microstocks read are from Windows file properties.  As far as I know, not all software supports this "standard".  IMO, it is better to use the IPTC, since it is a well-followed standard and most programs support it.

I put the info in the iptc area using Imatch, but also sometimes photoshop and all the sites are able to find it well.
