The researchers surveyed 736 college students and found that, basically, if you quietly stalk your friends on Facebook and then realize that your life doesn't measure up to theirs, you feel bad about yourself.

"If Facebook is used to see how well an acquaintance is doing financially or how happy an old friend is in his relationship -- things that cause envy among users -- use of the site can lead to feelings of depression," said Margaret Duffy, a professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

If you quietly watch your friends on MSG and then realize that your life doesn't measure up to theirs, you feel bad about yourself. If MSG is used to see how well an acquaintance is doing financially or how happy an old friend is, things that cause envy among users -- use of the site can lead to feelings of depression. If you believe the messages and think you are missing out. You have MSG and Microstock envy.

Believe in yourself and your own work.

I copied that to my Microstock notes. Yes, I'd agree, don't watch others on a forum to judge how you are doing. Some people are just looking for attention. I can never see how I'd believe an anonymous posters claims, when we can't get a look at anything they do.

Loved It:  Believe in yourself and your own work.

I don't really know how well most people on this forum are doing.  More than half are anonymous, so when they say they are doing great, that could be four times as well as I am doing or four times less.  Impossible to really know.

Facebook is a little less opaque but really, a lot of people talk themselves up on facebook to try and make their lives sound better than they are.

Is anyone going to post "Had a big fight with the wife today and no sex for me tonight"?  No.  They will post pictures with their wife in bikini on vacation surfing, or whatever.

Reminds me of the 25 year class reunion for High School. I didn't know I knew so many wonderful and famous, wealthy, successful, perfectly marvelous people. It was like meeting the Cleavers or the Cunninghams at every turn, Just amazing!

A couple of guys, who were friends all through Grade School and HS said, "Hey lets get out of here, go find a bar and have a beer!" That's what we did. Let the snobs be to their own group of pretentious phoneys.

I liked your point about FB. Yeah, except people in the hospital or who lost a loved one or favorite pet, (which is sincere) what you usually see is frosting to cover the real stale cake underneath.

As for forums, any forums, "Everything is true on the Internet" especially when it comes from an unidentified, unnamed, anonymous source who's close to the issues, or has a friend of a friend who knows someone.  ::)

The way I look at FB I figure if all my friends each do something really cool or interesting once a month, that pretty much fills up my news feed with cool interesting things. That doesn't mean they are all always doing cool and interesting things though. It is probably similar for microstock as far as best months - at least for a while everyone has one at one site every once in a while and if that is all they post it looks like everyone else is having them all the time. Unfortunately it also seems to appear to be true for worst months lately.

facebook is good for my psche. i look at all the popular people and trace back to them 5 years ago...
and i see they have since grown double-chin and actually spent and is still spending most of their time at the bar with their friends. ie. no life at all except getting strung-up on fast food and alcohol.
looking back, many of the hot girls do not look so hot either when i look back on 2005 which tells me 18 looks good don't mean the babes and guys are going to look just as hot at 28.
so, really, facebook is good when you have "friends" that are social butterflies
because now you have a career , and they still have nothing but double-chin and beer belly,
and no doubt, brewers' droop ;D

LMAO , on the contrary,
facebook is where i see all these people who spend their life sending out poke
and quotes daily to show how full their life is...
it is nothing to envy about .

who i envy is my neighbour who spends her day outside in her lovely garden during the summer making her house and surrounding the loveliest in the neighbourhood. then at noon and tea time, etc she sits under her tree by her white metallic table to read a book and sip tea while her dog is sleeping in the hammock.
this is real life to have envy ... not the people on facebook.
