I found this:
http://www.webdesign.org/web/photoshop/photo-editing/extracting-realistic-fire.16641.html
And theres also a plugin for 3ds max named FumeFX.
The guy you linked to sure does it perfect either way :o

I started something similar using real flame images and power of PS, but I never uploaded it. Of course, Misha does it much better....

when i was an indie musician doing my own cds, i had this as one of the cd covers. i did this with photoshop using filters. i learned it from some fella who used to design those old rock n roll burning images.
but from what whitechild and misha works reveal, it appears not just photoshop filters, but more
using a real flame as a brush then painting it over your image .
the flame looks more realistic, as compared to mine which is obviously photoshopped.
i prefer misha's and whitechild's method. i suppose i could get the smooth flame efx if i adjusted the sliders , but it's not really my niche. i like to leave it to misha and whitechild as they do it so much better .

it is most likely a 3d program like 3ds max or maya..

Photoshop does have the ability to make flames. If you start with a dark background and then dodge some parts of it, then use replace color moving the saturation and brightness, you can see the beginning effects of flames taking shape.
Then if you use one of those glass or wave filters, moving the sliders you can fine tune those vague shapes until they look like fire.
playing around that, you can also end up making it look like candle figures like the deep purple album cover Burn.
It's time consuming, but once you got the technique down like Misha, you can save those custom settings and cut down on your production time.
At worst, it's fun to use; at best, it can really be something to look at. As Misha and Whitehorse already provided the proof.

Oh, It's not so good in 100% zoom. :) That's why I didn't finish it.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread here, but I just stumble upon this tutorial, looks pretty good.

yes, that's the problem with flame images. To bring out the subtlety you need to boost the range using the Highlight/Shadows filter, which in turn brings out the noise.
It takes a lot of work to control the noise and succeed in getting a good image. But when you do succeed, it's outstanding. Not sure if the time:earning ratio disparity is worth the trouble. I would do it if it were selling at trad stock prices .

there is another flaming tutorial here

at first I thought it was a misha image, but it's not quite the same.
