Title: Flickr and Schmap
Post by: steheap on March 29, 2010, 11:39
A little while ago, I put small versions of my stock photos on Flickr to see if it would generate some interest in the photos and lead to more sales. I'm not sure if it has, but I have been approached by a company called Schmap to "donate" one of my pictures to the Schmap Washington DC Guide in return for a Photographer attribution.

Here is the link to the image they want to use: http://www.schmap.com/shortlist/p=46106336N03/c=SO2005701 (http://www.schmap.com/shortlist/p=46106336N03/c=SO2005701)

Anyone aware of Schmap and their approach to using photographs?

Steve

They use the accreditation-without-payment approach.
Go for it if you're into the "I'm stoked - my photo was published in a guidebook!" thing, don't go for it if you don't like giving your stuff away for free.

They approached me for a photo some time ago. I sent them the link to the image on iStock and told them if they couldn't afford a web size version, then they could forget it. Never heard from them again.

Yep, I got approached too.

They're just another company trolling for free images trying to take advantage of novices and do-gooders.

What value would getting credited have? It might have some value if you're doing a marketing blitz trying to get your name branded everywhere but for a stock shooter or most Flickr users? I don't see any value.

Even worse, I remember the message was a bit misleading. There was some wording about "we don't pay for your photos but our service is free of charge to readers". As if to imply they don't make money so neither should you which is BS. They left out the part about "we do make a ton of money charging [whoever their customers actually are] and your images add a lot of value".

Yep. I let these chancers have a shot when I was green....seems they get a lot of their images from FLICKR....when I later contacted Emma Williams at SCHMAP and offered to shoot to order in the UK (at a reasonable cost) they went very quiet. What a surprise.

Choice is yours but if they ever contact me again.....can't write that here.

Write back and say "Sure but in return I'd like you to 'donate' a space on your website homepage so I can promote my stock portfolio"

Never heard from them but I receive so many requests like yours in my 4 years of membership with Flickr.
The fact is this: if you want to give your photos away for free then go for it.
I have never ever given away my works for just a "full credit" and no cash. It belittles my efforts, the money I invest in equipment and the hours I spent at the pc.
