Title: For U.S. Artists: What IRS Business Code Do You Use?
Post by: GeoPappas on April 10, 2009, 17:31
For those of you that file taxes in the U.S.:

What IRS business code do you enter for Box B of Schedule C?

The description for business code 541920 is "photographic services" which includes photography studios, portrait, and commercial photography.

But that doesn't really describe what microstock photography is about.  Many of us don't have photography studios, and don't do portrait photography or commercial photography.

And what about those of you that do predominantly illustrations, or fractals, or CGI?

Does it really matter? (Oh-oh.)  ;D

I used 711510 - Independent artists, writers, and performers.

No idea if it's right or not!

Since I'm not technically the one directly selling to the customers and collecting the money - I couldn't figure out what the heck to use - so I put 999999.

I don't think it matters much, as long as the numbers match what IRS wants.

I know it's almost deadline to file, i started with microstock last year, still thinking if I should report it as business or a hobby. Anyone have advice on that?

Seems like "commercial photography" covers microstock to me.  I used the "photographic services" code too.

But I agree with goldenangel.  As long as you claim all your earnings you should be okay.
