Title: foreign exchange, is the grass really greener ?
Post by: tan510jomast on July 17, 2008, 12:40
we are definitely a global economy , no doubt. i notice lots of you from europe, and asia. but what many of us may not notice is the hidden benefits of being part of the "foreign exchange".
eg. a commission from ScanStock of 1 EURO is definitely more to us "americans" than 25 cents from IStock.
sure, i read that IS has more buyers, but we are talking about 1.56 vs 0.25
for one download.
i also noticed that "euros" seem to do much better here, and perharps, vice versa with euro sites for us americans.
by americans, i include canada, usa, brazil, latin am,... as i know many of you come from s . am, and c. am.
so, here's my topic for this thread:
what's your benefit for being the "foreigner" ?
is our grass much greener on this side of the world?

My benefit of being a foreigner is that I don't have to live in America...

Your grass looks a bit brown and overgrazed from here!

Since my earnings are from sales and licences from abroad my country does not charge me income tax... So the whole 100% remains in my pockets... And from here, to deposit in a Bahamas bank is like going to a local bank, with very tight banking secrecy... And I donīt get charged for depositing american checks in my local account... I really love to be here...

  ;) HermanM, oh lucky you!
;D seren, cute!
;D clivia,  you don't say! sometimes it glows too!
but jokes and skepticism aside,  don't take the words too literally ( i am "foreign" too, being brit and working across the Americas).
i was speaking metaphorically , in terms of being paid in Euro as opposed to US$      .
cheers all for your insight.  keep them coming! 8)

We in Australia at the moment are benefiting from the AUD US$ exchange rate if we are buying stuff. Currently we nearly have parity with the US$ which makes purchasing camera gear almost half the price it was a few years ago.

Once I have my 5D, Bowens studio set up, a 24-105L and a 85MM f1.2L the money I make from microstock will be revenue.

I will - except for the sites that automatically payout - be banking my sales with the agency until such time as the AUD US$ gets some value back.

Definitely, tan510jomast, there is an advantage for some photographers depending on where they live. For example, when I was living in Central America on assignment, I could live like a king for 500 dollars.
So if I were still there, and I make a commission of 50 dollars a month,
that's a big change in my spending power.
Of course, coming back home, 500 dollars won't even pay for my monthly expenses (payments, petrol, insurance,etc..).
I wish I was back there, for sure.
