Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) has released an annual survey (sponsored by iStockphoto) of more than 1,000 readers which indicates that use of stock imagery has grown nearly three times in just 25 years, starting at 39 percent in 1986 and reaching 98 percent in 2012.
Designers use rights managed images but predominantly use royalty free
Rights managed – 29%
Royalty free – 98%
Designers use multiple stock sites
Use only one – 14%
Use 2-3 – 49%
Use 4-5 – 31%
Use 6 or more – 6%

Well, no surprise.
They don't like the sort of pictures which sell thousands of times on micro. They want more diverse images, not posed, technically correct (do they know about IP problems with currently used technology?), in less usual scenarios, which would often cost a lot for permissions etc. Plus they want higher production values. And they want to pay less, for these images, that won't sell as often.
Presumably they also don't know or don't care about the percentage content producers actually get. Someone wants to be able to request custom illustrations ahd have people bid for $25 or equivalent credits. Gross, not net. (Actually don't they know there's a request forum on iStock and FAIK others?)
