Does anyone use the newer SSD drives instead of the IDE drives? I've been told that the SSD drives make photoshop fly!

Thanks.

I found this page on tips to increase performance on CS6
http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/05/14-tricks-tweaks-to-speed-up-photoshop-cs6-performance/

Also read that the SSD is only good on starting up CS6 faster but that's it thus at 6 to 12 times more expensive than my current drives I will be sticking with them...

Well, i have two ssd's in my pc.
With ssd's the whole system feels way faster, but for photoshop there isn't a huge difference. Of course it starts up way faster, and if you change some setting in photoshop, so that photoshops working file uses the ssd, then you might feel a small difference when using a large file with many layers. The thing is, that it really only needs the SSD, if your ram is getting full. If you have 8gb or more, this won't happen to often for normal photo retouching. So more ram will def. help more than an SSD!

I would still recommend a ssd. The PC is just more fun to use :) and Lightroom also feels faster!

Went from SATA2 to SSD and boot time for OS and apps are almost instant now.
PS & LR scratch disk are optimal on other dedicated drives but you'll still get a boost from the fast access on the SSD.
Go for it, pretty cheap nowadays anyway, I suggest Samsung 830 series (or newer) which are not the fastest around but more reliable then others, intel and crucial are also good choices.
Just make sure you don't get one with a Sandforce chipset since they seem to be less reliable, read all about it on google.
I've got 16GB RAM and PS still screams for more so I suggest maxing out the RAM first, then getting an SSD.

Jeff likes new toys Barry, a bit different then actually knowing the stuff.

I know you are trying to help out but that link does not provide the OP with any relevant info.

I'll agree to this.  An SSD will help with the start up speed and if you need to cache anything it might be a little faster, but overall if you are going to spend money on an upgrade I'd first get as much RAM and processor and you can.

I have an 60Gb SSD and it made a HUGE difference in my system. I installed the operating system (OS), photoshop (and PS scratch disk) there and everything seems to fly. You don't need to buy a HUGE SSD. Just by one large enough to hold the OS, PS and the scratch disk and I think you will feel the difference.

But if you really want to boost performance, add more RAM and change the OS.
I have a slow CPU for today's standards (intel core 2 duo e6750). I used to run Windows Vista (32bits) and PS on 4Gb of RAM and it was so slow that I was always going crazy. I kept the CPU and RAM, bought a SSD drive and installed Windows 7 (64bits) and PS 64bits. It felt like I have a new and MUCH faster computer. I don't even feel the need to buy a new CPU.
