Title: Have You Ever Entered Your Name in a Google Images Search?
Post by: rimglow on April 01, 2013, 18:58
Just typing my real name in the search field, here are the number of my stock image links I found on the first page:
50  Shutterstock
37  FAA
26  Depositphotos
25  Flickr
11  Cutcaster
11  Warmpicture
 9  My Website
 2  Bigstock

By going back and adding the words "stock photos" after my name, there was nothing from FAA or Flicker, but there were 92 from 123RF added to the above list.

I just recently joined FAA and Flicker. I loaded up some heavily watermarked stock samples on Flicker, with a link to GL Stock Images. (last week) I was surprised how fast they showed up on Google Images under my name.

I don't have clue how this stuff is sorted out. Number of views? I gave up on Cutcaster years ago.

Have You Ever Entered Your Name in a Google Images Search?

Yes, almost every day (sometimes even multiple times a day)! ;D

But absolute majority of image buyers unfortunately don’t search by author's real name nor nickname.
Unless it is some BIG name in the stock industry.

Most of buyers always search (only) by keywords and phrases/short sentences containing (key)words describing images they are looking for.
So (long and ideally unique) descriptions, titles, and keywords (in this particular order) of your images play much more important role when you want to gain good visibility for your images to possible buyers. This is especially true in case of author's personal website.

I don't have a very common name, however searching on the informal variation of my name produces a huge number of pictures of a local politician with the same name.

The search on the more formal variation of my name produces a huge range of mug shots of people with the identical name who have been arrested.

Both searches combined find maybe 5 of my images in the first 5 pages.

Well, I share the same name with a Mad TV character who is a bit more popular than me in the searches (but I'd say I'm 2nd unless it's cookies) - I don't sport the red sweater but I do resemble her a little at the 5:30 ish mark.
