I have a portfolio of 300 video clips and 250 photos and I rarely submit to micro-stock sites anymore. The single reason I stay with micro-stock is to showcase my stuff. I spent 2 years developing my Ebay DVD sales and other avenues. I started off selling DVD sets for peanuts. 300 clips/300 photos for $29. Now I sell them for $299. My best photos only go to Alamy and I never submit a prime piece of work to micro-stock.
Good luck in the rat race of Micro-stock,

-
So now you sell 300 clips for $300? Maybe someday you can move UP to microstock rates.
-
I just took a look at the website.
Now....I'm....very....confused......
I think I need to lay down
-
Per clip and photo I sell them for far less than 50 cents per unit.
I sell DVD sets that contain 50 GB of material.
-
I have not listed my video/photo website. Just one of my blogs. Don't want to be accused of self promotion.
-
I hope you have paid that funny microstock price to Fotolia for image at "Foods that will save your life no matter what" article :P
-
Yes I did. The one of Cacao beans, bought from Fotolia. I use Fotolia on all 3 of my blogs. Probably $200/month.
All those highly quality extra small pics for dirt cheap. Good deal.
And then you post them on a blog and 30 seconds later they are on Google images for free. WordPress should come up with a pluign to stop that.
-
Well, it's an interesting idea - but do you have to track orders, burn and mail the CDs yourself?
There are plenty of ways of trying to monetise our work and different ones work for different people.
-
The first 6 months it was Hell. Burning 15 DVDs on my desktop for a lousy $29-$69, then I started getting the Ebay and private feedback to use as references. Then I upped the price and went direct marketing. Facebook ads were a good avenue.
-
Just my opinion of course... but MS is way too saturated. There are a 1000 very good photos and illustrations on every subject.
I don't care about per unit price. It's how much I make per month that counts.
-
Well, it can be done much more than 5,000 at MS, believe me.
-
I can't find anyone selling stock video clips on Ebay at all. There are quite a few stock image DVDs for sale but none at anything like the sort of prices you claim. Most of them are 1000 images of $5 or thereabouts. Maybe you could provide a link to an example sale?
-
I guess your not very adept at an Ebay search.
So I am now providing bona fides?
For what purpose? I have not entered into self promotion.
I am not selling something... yet you want my secret ingredient for free.
-
OpenCL Render. ATI 4850. Cinema 4D 11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoLZHuW7BSI#ws)
I did a more complex render of this scene for a contact through a stock site. Took about 72 hours to render 300 frames on my quad core.
-
To digress for a second,
I'm very stoked about the new Nikon Coolpix P500. Especially the video. On the photo side I'm going to downscale to minimum sizes for MS. But the video really blew my socks off. One a tripod and with good lights of course.
-

You are definitely entitled to your privacy, but you did bring up the topic. I looked at ebay too awhile back for selling stock, and most of what I saw was so cheap that it didn't look like there was a lot of money in it. Especially when you start factoring in shipping and probably sales tax. I've sold prints that way and it was always a pain.
-
Building up a good blog or website certainly adds to exposure. The site I just sold a site while back got 1 million plus hits in 7 months and I was posting all of my pics for free. *link removed* (http://*link removed*)
I find micro-stockers overly protective and petty when it comes to their images. The fact is that with one download your highly prized photo has just been put for free somewhere on the internet. Stock Agencies and Cameras companies are making the money from artist.
But hey that's your choice. Free world and all.
-
It seems that you don't understand well this business: We don't sell just images: we sell licenses as well. Of course, photos can be grabbed by amateurs for their amateur blogs or pages, that is difficult to control, but very few legitimate business, big or small, would use unlicensed images. Those are the costumers that matter; the others wouldn' buy even if they could not rob.
-
You may be honest with everything you say, however I don't understand the purpose of this thread.
If you wanted to "share" your success with fellow microstockers without giving them any verifiable information about your venture what's your intention then?
I'm roaming anonymously for a number of reasons but I don't claim that I make $5000 and assume people believe me either.
People can sell crap on ebay and make thousands a month but it's all in the marketing and targeted traffic and not the actual product itself.
As you see there are tons of photo DVDs etc already on ebay for a few bucks. Why would anyone pay more for yours? Only because you can generate targeted traffic to your offerings.
Just because we have content doesn't mean we also know how to sell it ourselves.
That it is possible sure, but your posts are not helping anyone here IMO.
-
OK, we're not very adept at Google searches.
But I tried one anyway and found this...
https://flippa.com/122678-500month-Hot-website-collection-of-Video-clips-and-Photos
It says your site didn't sell, but you say it did. Did it?
It says you make $500 a month selling DVDs of your images and videos. You say $5000. Which is correct?
-
I find MS artist very much like Amway salesmen, they buy into the BS from the agencies.
I am not here to offer you anything. I'm simply saying there are viable alternatives to being a Micro-stock slave.
Micro-Stock will be so watered down and priced so low in a few years it will make all points here irrelevant.
Personally I think Pond5 will be the number One agency in 2 years if they stick to setting your own price. All other models will fail.
-

What makes you think the images on the DVD that you sold on ebay for $29 didn't end up on the web for free? There is no difference between someone buying an image on a DVD and using it on their blog (full res?) and buying it RF and using it on their blog in terms of someone willing to steal an image... Only in your case you sold it for $0.10 an image !
I would never buy anything off eBay in terms of image licensing for fear it was pirated in the first place!
-
You could also make $16,500 a day teaching photography.
Seriously though... you come into a MS Forum this way and expect us to "see the light" or something. ::)
-
Actually if you do your research you will find that I listed scarletwhore.com 17 different times on Flippa and sitepoint.
-
Why would I want to buy a 300 of only your photos when I could have my choice of millions from a wide variety of photographers for far less money? And I can even see them and test how they work in my designs before buying.
-

I'm pretty sure most of us here have enough business savvy to have figured that out. You could have said that, with that one sentence, in your first post. I see links to sites and blogs from you, so I'm guessing it's not that you are offering us anything, it's that you want something from us, like maybe traffic to your sites? Just wondering what the whole point here is.
It would be great, though, if you WOULD share your secret to making $5000 a month. I could sure use the help. ;)
-
I would assume the big selling point of my DVDs was the 300 HD video clips. With links to said clips at stock sites.
-
Again there is that suspicious attitude... like everybody is a scam. Get over yourselves, your not that important.
I offer 800 free pics through a download service. People have to fill out a survey to get the download.
It's free. But people sure get all worked up and suspicious.
Rather humorous.
Again the rather petty remarks of driving traffic to my sites.... quite childish.
I've had 15000 hits at *link removed* (http://*link removed*) in the last 10 days and climbing. A few clicks from here is not a big deal.
-
If you need to stir controversy and post your links here to have ten or twenty, hits... Well, that talks a lot.
-
Get over yourselves, your not that important.
Thats the humorous part.
Wheres Sean.. he would get a kick out of this.
-
Still confused about this...
https://flippa.com/122678-500month-Hot-website-collection-of-Video-clips-and-Photos (https://flippa.com/122678-500month-Hot-website-collection-of-Video-clips-and-Photos)
It appears you sold your previous site, along with the rights to your images and video clips.
Did that happen?
The page lists your various ports, but at least the Dreamstime one -- http://www.dreamstime.com/Canadafirst_info (http://www.dreamstime.com/Canadafirst_info) -- appears to be gone. Did the buyer get your images and videos? If so, how are you still selling them on Ebay?
-
Listen. I posted this entry this morning at it already has 450 hits.
*link removed* (http://*link removed*)
I don't need hits from MS group.
-
Please learn how to read.!
Unfortunately, this listing ended without a winner.
No Sale at Flippa.
Keep diggin.
-
I guess your not very adept at an Ebay search.
... I am not selling something... yet you want my secret ingredient for free.
If you're the seller and the buyers can't find your product then you are clearly 'not very adept' at how to list items on Ebay.
If you want to keep your 'secret ingredient' then why start the thread in the first place? You just sound like yet another failed 'wanabee' microstocker. Not everyone has the talent to make a living from microstock but those who do enjoy an extremely privileged lifestyle.
-
What's with the personnel attack?
-
Your flippa listing said you made $500 a month selling DVDs on Ebay. Here you're telling us $5,000. Which is it?
-
I never sold any websites on Flippa. I listed several sites over a dozens times. Never Sold.
-
Is this pic of a water drop good enough for MS?
*link removed* (http://*link removed*)
Please don't be a photo thefter. Looky only.
-
Please don't be a photo thefter. Looky only.
You accuse others of having a suspicious attitude, then immediately assume people are going to steal a photo that you post a link to? Nice.
-
Good job coming into a microstock forums to talk smack about microstock. We've never seen that one before. Very original.

Well somebody just clicked on the pick from this site.
I got Wordpress Stats. I can see.
Talk trash about MS. Free world do what you want.
-
So.... the water drop... good enough for MS?
-
wait I wanna be rich quick too... may I send you 250 photos I will give you 50% share!
-
Sorry Mate... I've seen your Portfolio, back to the sweat shop for you.
-
So.... the water drop... good enough for MS?
It might be accepted if it is good enough technically at 100% __ but sales are another matter. The buyers have a huge range of high-quality images to choose from;
http://www.istockphoto.com/search/text/water_splash_isolated/source/basic/#51bb5d8 (http://www.istockphoto.com/search/text/water_splash_isolated/source/basic/#51bb5d8)
Why not upload it and find out?
-
Sorry Mate... I've seen your Portfolio, back to the sweat shop for you.
too bad, thanks anyway
-
So.... the water drop... good enough for MS?
I made better shots wen I was ten. Not many... two or three out of hundreds, maybe. MS is not about the ability of making one good shot now and then, but of producing and uploading many acceptable or good pics a week. That's how this works.
That said, there must be ten thousand or so water drops photos, many more commercial than yours, at the MS sites. I don't like the black background, but that's just my taste.
-
Is the water drop image your 'secret ingredient' to earn yourself $5K per month?
-
I did not know you can post free advertising here!
-
Good job coming into a microstock forums to talk smack about microstock. We've never seen that one before. Very original.
::)
Thats the Kanye West School of Marketing Degree.
LOL!
-
You guys are a tough crowd.
I have an HDR version of the water drop that I sell print only. I'll never upload it or put it on MS.
-
I saw your port on Fotolia and thought the few clips I watched were good. Don't give up your day job making clips because the single photo linked here is IMO quite awful. As a photographer I would hope to have sufficient judgement to delete that shot immediately from the camera card and not flaunt it in circles of pro photographers.
-
Ouch...
Ok Mr. Pro Photographer.
It's a CG render. Not quite finished yet, needs a little photo shopping and PI effects.
Lol.... petty and childish.
-
The render just looks so real.
-
To digress for a second,
I'm very stoked about the new Nikon Coolpix P500. Especially the video. On the photo side I'm going to downscale to minimum sizes for MS. But the video really blew my socks off. One a tripod and with good lights of course.
I just looked at some full size sample stills from the P500 and they look horrible. You would be much better off with one of the cheap dslr's and I'm sure the video quality would be better too.
-
I haven't found one good review of the camera with proper test shots.
The 120 FPS at 640*480 is really cool. I got clips in the MS pipeline... we'll see.
In the right conditions the video I have shot is a good as dSLR video.
Quite surprised so far.
-
Ouch...
Ok Mr. Pro Photographer.
It's a CG render. Not quite finished yet, needs a little photo shopping and PI effects.
Lol.... petty and childish.
If it wasn't finished why did you ask if it would get into MS? And as a photographer that has earned a living entirely from photography for the last 25 years that is IMO.
-
You're full of BS.
You couldn't make that shot on your best day.
-
hang on
*getting a bowl of popcorn and slurping on some soda*
ok, ready, continue!

I hope that's O Natural with olive butter and sea salt?

This is getting better by the minute. Now we can also call this guy a THIEF.
I spent some time looking at his port on Shutterstock, and thought I recognized an image that I'd seen on Shutterstock before...
Check this out... http://www.shutterstock.com/gallery-232681p1.html#id=57718309 (http://www.shutterstock.com/gallery-232681p1.html#id=57718309)

Well you know, all images are free to use on the internet.
eta: I'm sure a lot of those images are made of stolen work. Any of those "keyhole" images or anything with an inverted or modified image, like the shopper woman. That content is too random for our OP to have created them all from scratch.
-
$2000
For that kind of money, I get an eighth of a day with Jesh or maybe produce my very own auto-tuned song about the gloriousness of Friday.
-
I can't find that image on my Shutterstock portfolio. hmmmm.
The file 'A speedometer on the Earth' is a popular 3d file included with one the major 3D packages available for download through torrents. In other words for those use the cracked version of 3DS or C4D there are a bunch of 3D scenes included.... usually a centurion underground release.
-

What, you mean this one: http://www.shutterstock.com/gallery-232681p1.html#id=57718309 (http://www.shutterstock.com/gallery-232681p1.html#id=57718309) from "scarletwhore" ?

Admittedly I don't know much about 3D, but assuming this is true, is it allowable to submit sample images that came with the (cracked!) software as your own?
-
The Artist who owns the 'A speedometer on the Earth' file and submitted the unchanged model is probably breaking some rule... but I'll let you rat finks jump on the piece of cheese.
-
so busted :'(

So, in an amazing coincidence, you both managed to render it from the same angle?

and the other artist has many other renders with different things on the speedo, different backgrounds etc.

You're full of BS.

Busted my ass. Nothing to bust. Your blowing smoke.
That image is on a dozen sites with years of sales. Your a little late now.

Not one of could produce an image this good.
-
and neither could you apparently :D
-
Well I am the original artist.
-
I'd say "artist" is an overstatement. You've got the stolen devil head, the stolen speedometer, and some random displacement shape. Good work.
-
Get real. You couldn't do 1/10th of my 3D Portfolio.
-
No, no Sean let him off he doesn't know who he's talking to!!!!

Witch Hunt. Bring it on.
-
Get real. You couldn't do 1/10th of my 3D Portfolio.
Yeah right. Exactly as I thought, a failed wanabee. So to summarise ... Canadian, started microstock mid-Feb 2010, stole images to boost portfolio, gave up microstock as hopeless failure, now trying to persuade others that microstock is 'rat race' and claiming to earn $5 per month through selling images by other means with no evidence whatsoever. Anything I've missed?

You guys are so easy to fuk with....

Haha, the poor loser was too fast on deleting the image with the girl ;D that's why only one link worked.

Nope, he chickened and deleted the image in question. He might as well pull all port off, would be a good idea.
-
You guys are so easy to fuk with....
yeah if you mean that we don't tend to like IP thieves here you're right.
Not surprising as many of us feed ourselves and our families by selling licenses to our work.
Try creating something instead of taking other people's work.

Again there is that suspicious attitude... like everybody is a scam. Get over yourselves, your not that important.

Rather humorous.

For you boys. Hugs and Kisses.
I’m a Red Hot Lady of the Night
Lookin for love that makes me feel Right
Doomtards and Jokers scorn my good Taste
The time is upon us, let us make Haste
I’m a Red Hot whore pure of Mind
Lookin for truth anywhere I can Find
We’ll surf this Apocalypse to the Gates of Hell
And knock on the door and jingle the Bell
Sojourners in Wisdom and freaks on the Street
We confound their system, in tune with our own Beat
No sense of Rhythm and no sense of Rhyme
We voyage the future on our own Time.
Stay thirsty my friends,

Retire now and you can remain a legend in your own mind.

Oh yes. You don't get car-crash entertainment like this on the IS forum.
Actually, thinking about it, you do ... only it's usually IS themselves doing the crashing.

Staying thirsty I'm going to fill out the survey and then download free set of 800 stolen images behind original keyhole.

Hey Scarlet Bonehead, I was informed by a number of kind people here that you stole an image of mine. What a dick. You're already reported to Shutterstock for the keyhole picks on your pathetic little port there. Better yank 'em fast you no-talent thieving troglodyte. Next will be the Cease and Desist order for your stockphoto4free.com site. Hope you enjoyed the hits there today because I'm making it my personal new hobby to shut it down for good. You just screwed with the wrong guy. . . . Keep your day job, Bubba.

Bring it on, bring it on, bring it on. From here to the eyes and the ears of the 'verse, that's my motto. Or at least it would be, if I start having a motto.

And take it off your banner here, too. AMD FusionFX - Scarletwhore.com - blip.tv (http://blip.tv/file/4581865#id4600225)

Que? Istock are about the worst agency when it comes to taking action against thieves, even for exclusives. They really don't give two sh!ts about their contributors. They can't even secure their own site, much less police wider abuse. You really do need to get out more (from the IS forums) if you actually want to understand the situation.
Anyway, you probably won't be 'glad to be exclusive' for much longer. We're all having a very good March, which will disguise the issue for exclusives, but just wait until the summer. That's when reality will really hit. My data suggests that exclusives might be down around 20-40% compared to 2010. Independents will probably be down a bit too, due to the commission reductions at IS & FT, but strong growth at SS will make up most of the difference. Stockfresh is just coming on-line too. The situation is changing. Drastically.

Five super models came into my room and ripped my clothes off, kissing me and telling me I was the best. Couple minutes later I fell out of bed and woke up. When are you going to wake up; this is a good fantasy totally up-supported by any facts.
I'm going back to bed, maybe the models will return!
