Hey Folks,  I am interested in how many still bring thier big dSLR on trips? With the new technology advancing in iPhones/Samsung seems like the dSLR is a thing of the past.

thanks

Why is the choice only between a DSLR and a smartphone?
There are lots of other options available.
I use a small Panasonic camera with a good zoom capability (TZ200) (when I don't want to take anything larger with me).

For Real....The smart phone is still just not good enough. I will use it if I have no other camera. For me maybe 30 % of the sites will take the small images from the phone. Now for video most all the sites will take the phone video. The video is for most of the time if in good light very good quality.

I usually bring both a smartphone and a full frame camera on trips. But I would use the big camera only in challenging light and use smartphone for simple shots during the day. Uploaded some smartphone shots to Adobe, they were all accepted. Actually microstock is not worth more than smartphone pictures

The poll clearly show that the smartphones aren't really to replace our dSLR or other types of cameras just yet for images. I know the new iPhone is 12mp which most dSLR are 20mp to 50mp. Is that the primary reason that the cell cannot compete? The new iPhone does have RAW mode thus should help to produce better images?  The 4K videos seems to be okay for submitting to the MS companies.

No, it's the sensor size ...

Every time I have looked at a cell phone photo in detail - it sucks. Maybe if you downsize to the minimum it would be good enough (and lets face it, most web uses are tiny, and for that they are fine).

For web use and microstock prices - sure, cell phone photos should be good enough. As far as better than an APS-c of full frame sensor at full resolution, not even close.

video might be another story, I don't know about that.

Just arrived from 8 days trip in mountains.
I used my dslr with tri/monopod. Actually most of time just the monopod.

I did use my phone too and it's very convenient and enough for some moments. I still use the same smartphone for 7 years which is fine for calls/net/drive drone. I see great future in smartphones but i will not spend 1.000 for a tiny sensor that comes in a phone. Plus i cannot use my lens.

I rather wait a little more or pay that money for a new body to use my lens ;)

poll misses other opps -- i carry my phone but never take pix since i can't hold it steady (neuropathy tremor)

however, i ditched my dslr in favor of a bridge camera (lumix FZ-1000) at about 1/2 the weight (and cost) w little drop in quality (and still have easy bracketing for HDR); i use a non-extended monopod braced in my camera bag & camera held to use straps as additional support.  it also lets me shoot where tripods aren't allowed.  downside is fixed lens, but i kept a zoom on my dslr an rarely changed lenses

no difference in acceptance rates since my change 2 yrs ago

another hack is to use topaz Giga AI to upsize, then reduce to 6 mp for agencies  - works great to improve image quality

Depends on the trip. If it's a photo trip to make money I bring the pro equipment. For a leisure trip a phone is good enough for me.

I own the latest Samsung mobile and my wife the previous iPhone one. On occasions, I have used both for stock. There is no way these phones are close to even an one inch camera sensor.
Also, they might shoot RAW, but not in the highest resolution. If you have a 12 Megapixels phone that is no big difference, but in the case of the 64 Megapixels camera model there is. In case of the Samsung, when I resize 64 Megapixels down to 18 or 15, it usually looks "ok". All these phones give photos with high sky compression problems, which are not clearly visible if you do not shoot the sky. All mobile phone pics - due to the small sensor - have noise that needs to be eliminated. The old trick works here: just zoom to at least 200% in your editing program and see noise before you edit and upload. For videos, things are more forgiving. I would personally give and edge to the Samsung here. The 8K video is useless but because it crops from a bigger resolution (I don't know if it is the 33 needed for 8K or part of the 64 Megapixels) it gives a better 4K video than the iPhone with less or sometimes not visible noise. Do I get sales with these? Yes. In fact I got more sales with videos shot with my mobiles or various GoPro I own or used in the past, than with my Sony camera. Why? Probably because I had the small devices with me all the time and the editorial videos I shot are less offered in the various libraries. In fact my highest editorial video sale, earning me over $600 was shot with a mobile. That covered over half the cost of my mobile with one sale! I am really waiting to see technical details of how will the latest iPhone 13 Pro or Max record videos in ProRes. You just have to buy the 256 GB model (or up) to get 4K, or it will only record ProRes in HD. Also, the 4K will be limited to 30 fps.
The next thing would be to wait for a comparison between the iPhone ProRes and the high bitrate Filmic Pro records (you need to separatelly buy the program though). A final technical detail: I use Filmic and can record 10-bit but Premiere won't "see" the footage, probably for a metadata thing that does not allow it to interpret colors correctly, but Reslove does .Even so, bitrate using Filmic is way higher than the in camera Samsung does, but - even after the latest Filmic update - resolution is limited to a bit over 4K, something like 9 Megapixels instead of 8. I think Samsung does not allow third parties to use the full 8K video resolution.

Difficult to answer properly. First off I only have a iPhone SE and a Tab E. Both not that "special", so they aren't important. I have a GoPro Session, which is simple and wonderful. One button, and it's shooting stills or video. Then a Pocket 2 in the photo vest. A T2i goes everywhere with me, simple, one zoom lens, small bag, and wrist grip.

This is for travel, not when I'm planning to shoot something, which means a DSLR.

So what I mean to say is... I have never used a smart phone as my main photo tool. It's a phone.

No, it's the sensor size ...

That's why. You can't fool physics, the larger sensor is always going to make better quality images, in the right hands.

On the other side, if the question is limited to Microstock, anything is fair game, and Good Enough is just fine.
