Title: How much do models pay?
Post by: stoker2014 on September 17, 2022, 03:48
I shoot videos for stock (but photographers have the same problem). And we all perfectly understand that in order to be successful on stocks, you need to shoot many different models. These are people who need an approach and who need to be paid all the time. How is work with models organized, how do you negotiate, how do you find models and how much do you pay them?

I paid 25€ an hour for each model and 25€ for travels costs.
But my last shooting with models was about 5 years ago.
But there are also opportunity costs. I can use my time more profitable doing other things.
A shooting with models take about the same time as shooting a wedding.
A small wedding package is about a 1/2 day shooting and about 500€ profit.
If i do a stock shooting i probably earn less money for same effort than shooting weddings.

Don't you think that you paid them very, very much. I heard that the normal rate is 10-15 dollars per hour. Of course, we are not talking about professional models. But the stock agencies themselves write that they need ordinary people as they are.

If we take the US as an example... 'ordinary people', on average, make about $25 an hour. If you pay them $10 to $15 then that's either minimum wage, slightly more than minimum wage or less than minimum wage... depending on the State. So yeah, depends on the country, but if it's the US or a good portion of Europe etc... $25 an hour is not very, very much.

You can try to pay 15€ an hour. Maybe some of the models will come to the shooting.

It is possible not to pay models at all. Negotiate on TFP terms.

Yes, what is the minimum wage? We also do not receive minimum wage from stock agencies. Yes, and let people still try to find work for this minimum wage. Here the market, as you agree in theory. You can even offer $5 an hour. I understand that there are different models and they do different things. Someone specifically executes your script somewhere, and someone works at their workplace and receives some money for a signed release.

It is necessary to properly organize the work in order to pay the models a little, and get a lot from the sale. In order not to write later "but I earn more at weddings."
Perhaps by models we mean different people with you. The topic is not only about how much to pay, but also how not to pay :) and where and how to look for them.

Well you should do what works best for you.
I always paid my models.
Don't know any secrets how not to pay the models.
But you can try tfp.
Good luck.

The federal minimum wage in the United States has been $7.25 per hour since July 2009. Some states may be different.

Are the photographers going to be filing employment records, W-2s, taking out taxes, SS and FICA? Then the hiring is either by contract or illegal? Assuming this is work for hire, not "employment", the minimum wage is what someone will accept.

My Summer job I get paid by the day, but they have to keep track of hours, to prove to the state that we are not being paid less than minimum wage. They claim under the exemption of "Employees of certain seasonal amusement..." so no overtime. Our usual is a 8 1/2 hour day (not including our lunch hour, but that goes on the clock) Roughly $11.50 an hour.

Oh, in some countries, you probably also need to conclude an agreement with the model! And that the payment was not lower than the minimum.
Better for those who live in third world countries, there are no contracts and no taxes.

Yes, you can easily not pay models, just easy. If these artists who draw graffiti, you need to approach them and tell them that you shoot for such stocks and if they sign the release, this will be an advertisement for them. I get signed for a release for free! Any people who are busy with their profession and if it is correct to explain to them in approximately general terms without details, they will also sign the release either for free or for $5. It’s worse when people are needed to shoot a specific story, at a specific location, it’s already difficult not to pay there.
