Hi Guys,

Often people complain about having more files rejected at one agency rather than another, but I bet none of you have had the most ridiculous results that I have just had:

I uploaded 1,000 photos to the 2 top agencies.
Istock rejected 2, and accepted 998
Shutterstock rejected 994, and accepted 6

This is truly the most ridiculous thing I have ever come across whilst dealing with any agency. Absolutely nothing can justify or explain in any logical way these differences in numbers. Nothing.

Anybody brave enough to try...?

Good luck.

J.

Automated reviews can explain it.  ;)

The same thousand images accepted by Istock, are rejected by bots at Shutterstock...? :)

I must be very naive but to me this is incomprehensible.

The SS is back on the warpath unfortunately.... :-\ For the past year things seemed to normalize and I was getting a 75%-80% acceptance. The last few weeks I'm back down to 5%.....and they're usually images with less commercial appeal IMO. Having said that, I would never ever submit 1000 images in one batch! To any agency!

Reviews for still image are just totally random, while in video I get about 97% accepted and the only ones refused are for copyright infringement.

Sometimes image reviews make for excellent laughs:
The first batch of 50 photo I submitted a couple of years ago have about half that sell regularly, some of them very well at SS. The other half are complete turkeys. When I submitted them to another agency guess what? Every single one of the turkeys was accepted, every single one of the good sellers refused.
Once I was asked for a model release for a plate of paella (maybe because the prawns were "king").
At another agency I used to get all the food images containing meat refused, then I realised that the reviewer was vegan.
Another refused several ones for dust spots, I had to reply: "those are called birds, they are animals that fly. Something like airplanes, but much smaller"

I'm not saying its right but it is comprehensible IS now accept everything except where there is a property/copyright issue. SS still review images (whether by bot or otherwise) so if they don't like them they will still get rejected.

iStock has been accepting just about everything (photos) for a couple of years. You did incredibly to manage to get 2/1000 images rejected, unless it was for IP.

Haha I know. I crop out most birds if they don't add anything for just that reason.

As others have said istock has been accepting everything for a while. Annoying for you that you had so many rejected on SS. We're they all similar? Maybe the reviewer couldn't be bothered to go through them all in detail as it such a big batch, so rejected them all after looking through the first few.

I'm just wondering how long does it take to click through all the categories for 1000 images in a batch, assuming they were already on some other agencies and keyworded?

Submitting 1000 images to iStock? I'm sorry, I can't help you. My sincere condolences. A hopeless case. Why people do that to themselves?

Its perfectly logical - they're probably 1000 images that are terrible in some way but don't have any copyright or IP problems. Istock is relying on the search engine to effectively kill them, whereas Shutterstock kills them on arrival. Why not post some images & we can give you better feedback.

Here is the link to my portfolio:

www.shutterstock.com/video/gallery/MotionWorks-Film-Studio-4312687/

(if you say 'hey those are videos...' - please be aware that at the end of every video I shot, I then took a still at 4k resolution, so basically the technical quality and artistic value of the shots you see in the link are exactly the same as the stills I submitted)

I think if 99% of the portfolio is accepted at Istock, surely only 1% acceptance rate at Shutterstock is beyond any reasonable logic?

Or you could look at it the other way...

I think if only 1% of the portfolio is accepted at Shutterstock, surely a 99% acceptance rate at Shutterstock is beyond any reasonable logic?

But it has been explained over and over that istock takes everything now, so no, not illogical in any way.

But my portfolio has also been accepted at a 90+% rate at all the other agencies..except shutterstock, which has given me only 1% acceptance rate...

As I said...totally illogical, and nobody has an intelligent justification, other than to bash my portfolio, or critisize my submission technique. I thought that maybe some of you guys would be smart enough to understand the simple laws of probability and provide an intelligent reason, instead of scoffing and criticising how many images I upload etc...I realise I am competition for you guys, but surely not impressive enough to draw ridicule from anyone.

What a pity...:(

I don't think its intended as ridicule really you need to ask SS as none of us have actually seen the images so we can't really judge. All I'm saying is the common factor is the format of the submission SS may not like it.

Pauws99..yes you have seen the portfolio - I sent a link in my previous message, but it doesn't even matter if the images were all terrible or excellent - why would all the major agencies accept them and just one agency reject them? Is that one agency completely different from all the rest? Again I say, zero logic...

Not the images actually submitted  anyway no one on here can answer your question only SS. If they want to be completely different from everyone else thats their choice misguided as it might be. I don't really know what answer you are wanting most people I think get high acceptance rates on SS so either you have a rogue reviewer or for some reason SS don't like your images so ask them.

Shutterstock usually gives a reason for a rejection: what was it?
Was it the same for all the images?
