Title: Is It Worth It?
Post by: jjneff on December 31, 2013, 13:51
There is a little pimp video here but I am trying something new. I buy the camera for this footage train the shooter then then pay for the clips full property release. It dose not come cheap! so I was wondering if you thought it is worth it. I know time will tell but I have consider this for other subjects.

I wonder if the military is going to approve of this. Isnt that confidential stuff?

If you can get this released, I guess its worth it, looks good. But I have no idea what the demand is. It would definitely by a niche.

This is not confidential stuff, there are only certain times a solider can film so this is all in the clear. The military is paid for by tax dollars and you will see lots of military clips on stock sites. Most of this collection is already online as I have all the releases I need

OP - Is it worth it to pay for this kind of niche? or to do this for any niche

I guess in the long run you can answer this question better than we can. A niche is valuable when there is demand and it can't easily be copied. It looks like this couldn't easily be copied, so the question is does the demand make paying the cost worthwhile? I am sure there are niches that aren't worth the expense and others that don't belong on microstock.

For something that is expensive but not easily done by others it would be nice if you could put it on P5 and set the price high - or Vetta video (do they have that?).

Good points I was wondering if microstock was the best place. I do have some in Vetta and they will be on Getty. Will be interesting to see.

Working on that most clips are 1080 so you can use the software of your choice for stabilizing down to 720. Thanks for the advice I will look into that more. Advice much appreciated!

I have the same camera and will do the job pretty well with little practice, but buyers like History Channel, Natgeo, Discovery etc will look first on Pond5 and some of them only there. If you ask me is it worth I believe YES but you must put them on Pond5.
Good luck :)

I don't mind the camera shake. I feel like it adds a certain amount of realism. However, it would be nice to have some with and some without. I can see a market for this selling to indie film-makers looking for footage that they have no way to shoot. You might want to stop in at the Planet5D forum as well as offering to write a blog post about the footage for videomaker.com. You could also post on the forums at videomaker.

This is not usually a good idea but you might consider trading some limited usage rights for subject access and a property release. You may also require model releases for clips like your example.
