Title: Is stock a genre of photography?
Post by: melastmohican on May 22, 2008, 12:48
I guess Photojournalism, Nature, Wedding, Portrait, Candid, Erotic or Macro are separate genres. Some of these categories sell some not in microstock world so what defines stock photography?

That's EASY, it is its own genre of photography by far... given its global economic impact and breadth of use.

That said I think the sub-categories of "stock" are those, nature, wedding, portrait, candid, erotic, macro, even artistic or interpretive.  Hmm, definition of stock photography... art that is produced to sell after it is produced as opposed to commissioned, in any genre. It's a catch-22, isn't it?

Good point, man.

Not at all, it's merely a means of selling the many genres of images that already exist.

genre |ˈ zh änrə|
noun
a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.

as an artist and musician, i would say...
stock photography is more of a formula, rather than a specific genre.
