Title: Is stock/microstock your main activity?
Post by: sweetgirll on April 28, 2011, 11:58
Hi guys
I was wondering how many here work full time in the stock image industry, or has it as their main activity.

Full time for me.  I have about 10% of my images in micro/RF....the rest with traditional RM agencies in addition to self-marketing (RM only).

I'm retired, comfortably, and enjoy photography including micro as a hobby. I make 99% of my photography income from gallery sales of landscapes. 99% of my income is from investments, <1% from photography sales.

It is my full time job right now.  I have plans to start doing other things as well other than micro (arts and crafts and whatnot).  Until that happens I do this all the time.

full time editorial and catalog (mostly fashion) shooter here.  can pull lifestyle images from some editorial shoots (only occasionally from catalog).  have been trying to arrange more stock/microstock targeted shoots in downtime.  resale of editorial glamour and celebrity has paid better than micro for me as I am still building a library for micro.  editorial resale and micro combined only account for a small percent of income compared to my assignment shooting, but I think of it as my babysitter (keeps me from getting in trouble).

"If it was my kids would be eating grass"

Wow! Than you must be making a lot of $$$ since one ounce of grass cost over $150 in Seattle- average street value LOL!

My answer would be... not yet :). Working on it this year. I own a small graphic design and advertising company (graphic design, print, web, video).

But since the beginning of January this year been working hard on microstock and happy to saw that I am increasing my Monthly revenue each month by 100 to 150$ so I do hope to make it full time by the next year, or at least greatly reduce my company work and gain more freedom and personnal creativeness (if that's a word) :)

For me, vector microstock is part-time. Currently, I spend about a half-hour per day on it. I've been at it for awhile though, and it is now 60% of my total income. For the first couple years that I was building my portfolio. I would spend 2-3 hours per day creating vectors. Microstock has been a life-changer for me and my family, and I'm grateful every day.

From 9-5 each day, I'm a graphic designer. I think that helps me immensely to create good stock (stock that designers need and want).

Sort of... in that it is the money making activity that I spend the most time on - not necessarily the most lucrative, but it is in addition to some others. Luckily I am cheap - very cheap.
